I’m seriously thinking about buying a foreclosure home. Not now (maybe in a few years) but I’m researching FHA loans and the entire process. It’s a serious long-term goal I’m setting for myself. It’s too far off for the bf to panic but my parents are being super supportive. Considering my mom was a real estate agent & FHA inspector and my father owns a construction company, I have access to tools, discounted supplies, advice and help. We’re a land investment type of family. I’ve stepped up my game on saving up for a down payment. I’m getting my ducks in a row all Suze Orman style over here! Whether we’d like to live in the home or flip it after some fixing up, this will all be based on situation, location and the state of the property (and the economy) upon purchase. At this point, it’s all about patience, saving up and research. Scary exciting stuff!

I finally went to the South of the James Farmer’s Market. I am in love with that place and so glad it’s going on until December 4th! I bought grass-fed beef from a local farmer for cheaper than at the grocery store. (It comes frozen and sealed so you can make it back home safely.) We bought beautiful heirloom cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, blackberries, and had tacos and breakfast burritos. I’m getting flowers, bread and more next time! Perfect way to throw together a special weekend dinner and get yourself out of the house on a Saturday morning. Here’s a Flickr pool of Richmond farmer’s market photos.

This particular comic is wonderful! It compares Orwell and Huxley’s fears for our future. Yeah, we’re screwed.

For all you suckers out there (I’m one of them), aren’t these lipsticks adorable? Of course, after a few uses, they’ve lost their charm but good grief! So cute! $25 each here. (via and all over the web now because us suckers for cute… we are legion)

Oh hey! Did you notice I changed the look of my + & – posts? No big deal but I think it’s simple and cute!

This post from DI$COUNT about what luxury is to them… yes.

This entry from Postcards from Yo Mamma. Seriously, why? It happens to me all the time.

The bf went out of town two weekends ago. While he was gone, I picked up a box of his favorite chocolates. He brought me back French tarts from a bakery we love in Maryland. This is why I have my next entry in the minuses…

I don’t own a scale and judge my weight by my jeans. There’s no denying they’ve been a bit snug lately but the cold hard truth hurts. I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago and got weighed. I’m back to the most I ever weighed, about 2 years ago- 128lbs. Two years ago it was sitting on my ass drinking beer. This time, I barely drink, and it’s from sitting on my ass and bad food choices. This may not be a big deal to some of you but it’s kind of a big deal to me. I like the way I feel and look when I’m around 120. My body does not like this extra weight. My skin changes. I physically feel like yuck. I’m only 5’1″ and it means that if I don’t reign it in, I have to buy new clothes and I am NOT buying a new wardrobe because of laziness and shoving cheese in my face. Things have gotten real around here in the food department. It’s salad time but, I hate the gym. Hate it. I would rather all that sweat and effort have some instant results so, hard labor is more my style. Yard work, psychotic cleaning, etc. It’s on.

We had a big rainstorm on Thursday and on the sofa, while I was being a dork on my laptop and the bf was being a dork on his Xbox, we heard a loud pop. The bf saw a flash of light and the TV cut off then back on. We sat stunned for a second wtf-ing a lot and then ran to check it out. Water. From the ceiling. Leaking. On the 50″ plasma TV the bf bought himself after his tax refund. His baby. Fuck. It’s still working but of course something has been fried. How crucial? No clue. Thank god for renter’s insurance. I’m gonna make a call on Monday and see what we need to do. Oh, and the landlord needs to fix that leak.

Online, I’m definitely of the “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all” school. Except here (on MY blog), where I have given myself a chance to get some things off my chest. Sometimes these things are silly, sometimes serious. Only once here have I specifically directed any spite/jealousy towards a very young (in my opinion, over-hyped) fashion blogger. IFB has a post about fashion bloggers being cruel to their peers. It’s an interesting read with a lot of interesting comments. Only once has someone directly insulted me in my comments. I was told I was “a little too old” to opine that crop tops are unattractive. Also for good measure, the teenage guy (yes, a boy) added that I should go ahead and get a nose job. Wow! Never heard that one before! Anyhow… it didn’t bother me. I find that most people are of the sucking variety and when you put yourself out there online, it’s bound to attract assholes. We all need to get used to it and screen our comments. I enjoy the blogs that simply exist to be mean. Go Fug Yourself has a HUGE following. Those women are hilarious. Oh, and Goddammit, I’m Mad! is my absolute favorite. Let’s admit this simple math: most women dress for other women + women are catty = there will be pain. Here’s a good post on blogger etiquette.

One of the coolest handmade gifts I’ve ever seen: Anabela from the blog Feildguided is starting a new feature of people’s homes called “Homebodies” and was allowed to take pics of Melinda Josie’s adorable home. Josie is the creator of this great kitty buds fabric (in addition to many other wonderful things). Anyhow, her fiance carved this as a Christmas present for her. It’s Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird in her ham costume. Amazing.

Today, I had a lady day with my dear bff Jen (have you checked out her new food blog yet?). I had a half day at work and met her in Carytown after she got her wig smoked. We ate a great lunch at Can Can, talked and talked, and then wandered around checking out a ton of shops we had never been to. We went to Roan. Holy hell! I didn’t know those brands were sold in Carytown! I pawed Lanvin, Chloe, Jason Wu, Alexander Wang (still not impressed), Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy, Jil Sander… all in all, we were dying in there.

sigh, Louboutin

At Need, Jen did her own version of Man Repeller in this sweet union suit.

I also spotted this Miu Miu knockoff. No bueno.

At Pink, I was sooo tempted to get this bag. I’m still thinking about it. A cross-body bag would be nice. We finished up with margaritas at Nacho Mama’s and called it a day. Phew! I’m worn out!

Layers&Swathes beat me to the punch and posted about an incredibly patient/talented artist Kate MccGwire. Check out her post.

-

I get the whole #firstworldproblem hashtag on twitter. Really I do. People like to complain so it’s a way of acknowledging that your bitching is really whining when there are so many bigger problems out there, but you’re going to whine anyways. (Example: “Why do I always manage to get the shopping cart with the bum wheel? #firstworldproblem”) These tweets get on my nerves like no other. Really? Are we starting to feel that damn guilty for the lives we lead? Feeling guilt for the only life we’ve ever known? No matter how many sad things you see in the news, you will never truly know how people in third world countries feel. Do all of them want to be like us? No. Get over yourself, and if you really want to make a difference, donate to a charity and move on.

I am half Serbian and I am so ashamed and disgusted with a new movie that has come out called Srpski Film (A Serbian Film). Here is a review by one of my most adored bloggers. I am so incredibly sick and tired of “art” being an excuse for depravity. Political statements can be made in so many ways other than this.

Everything I’ve added to wish lists or bookmarked for further contemplation ends up being sold out before I decide to purchase. Either it’s a sign that I need to quit shopping or I need to make up my mind faster.

City Kitty update: I saw her on Saturday and she’s gaining weight! She’s noticeably fatter and her spine and ribs aren’t as bony. I’ll be keeping an eye on her progress and hope that my note may have gotten her the attention she needed. Thanks for all the input! I was gearing myself up to grab her and go beat on their door… which I still may end up doing. We’ll have to wait and see.

I am loving this new blog Naked Without Lipstick. She is a 35 y/o lawyer in Chicago who has busted her ass to get where she is. Her blog isn’t fancy and full of pictures but I find her refreshing and love her take on things. Lately, my blog subscriptions have been focussing more on people I could actually see myself befriending, rather than simply appreciating their style.

So, I have a taxidermy chipmunk, a deer head wall decal, owl earings and a fox necklace. I am totally ready for gophers!

I got a $25 bamboo kitchen rug for in front of my sink for $5 at Marshalls. I love that place so hard.

I went to H&M on Saturday. I’ve noticed that hardly any of the things I’ve purchase there end up lasting in my closet for any length of time so I hadn’t been in over 6 months. Not much has changed but they were having a great sale and I got this all-season wool-blend dress for $15!! It fits perfectly, is made well and is lined oh-so-nicely! Honestly, I don’t need it. This is one of those tricky games I like to play with myself. It’s classic. It will never go out of style. I can wear it to any function under the sun at any time of year. So yeah, I bought it. Now something needs to go. I think I know what it will be.

-

This is only going in the minuses because I’ll probably offend someone. I’m 31. I have given myself a breeding cutoff at 35 because I just don’t think it’s safe. The health risks for babies explode exponentially after the mother turns 35. Regardless… I am nowhere near being ready to have a child any time soon. The bf isn’t either. I can’t even imagine a day in the near future when we will be ready. I know it’s said that if you waited until you were ready, no one would have kids but; I am just not that blatantly irresponsible to quit taking my birth control. I have been caring for my disabled mother for over half my life. I feel like I’ve gotten that care-giving uber-responsible shit out of my system. There are a lot of things I haven’t been able to do because of all this responsibility. I want to do those things. The thing that gets me torn is that I think I would be a great mom. I don’t want to regret missing out on all of that but; being around more people with children lately, the bf and I have come home and curled up on the sofa only to realize we wouldn’t be able to relax like that if we had a kid. Holy crap life would be insane! I know you moms are enraptured by your little darlings… and I think they’re pretty magical as well, when I can give them back. This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the issue at the moment (and let’s not even talk about tweens and teens… because they can just kiss my ass):

This is for my friend Jen. We’ve known one another since 8th grade. She just started a food blog and I’m super excited for her. I was going to do a big post to introduce her blog and scan a ton of old embarassing pics of her but I think she’d much rather I just tell you to check out her cooking adventures and add it to your reader. She’s hilarious and a damn fine cook!

Who does this remind you of Jen?

I love stationary and silly stupid me wants some mini MOO cards for the blog. I don’t have a logo so I’m using one of their Ready Made designs by artists. I’m digging this set with 36 different designs.

This guy is the epitome of a creep… the type of person that chills my bones.

A ton of pictures of the same damn thing on blog posts – this goes for design and fashion. I don’t need to see that lamp from every damn angle. I don’t need to see that outfit in a 10 different poses. One full length and a few detail shots are plenty. I get it.

I keep adding things to online wishlists to think about. Everything sells out before I’m ready to buy it.

So, a few doors down from me, there’s a huge house with a huge family who runs their own business. They also have dogs and a poor little cat who has gotten lost in the shuffle. (This I found out from my neighbors across the street because I’m incredibly nosy.) I discovered “City Kitty” months ago, roaming the streets at night. She had tags, which I assumed were for the cat getting lost, because I sure as hell would want someone to call me if they found my cats dodging cars. I called both numbers on her tags repeatedly and no one answered. My bf was getting annoyed with me so, I let it go. Well, City Kitty kept coming around my front steps. She’s so scrawny you can feel each individual vertebra and ribs. I have been feeding her and so has our nice neighbor upstairs. I finally got sick of it one day and left a passive-aggressive note to end all notes for the owner expressing my concern that she may have worms and needs to see a vet. It’s been over a month and the cat is still a sack of bones. I talked to my vet yesterday and I have 4 options: 1 – bring the cat in and pay for it all myself then take the owners to small claims court and I will probably win but maybe not. 2 - call animal control and get the owners in trouble. The cat runs a risk of being taken away and being put down. 3 - have a face-to-face with the owners which will probably get ugly because I have a big mouth when I’m pissed off and this whole thing is really burning my ass. 4 – mind my own damn business. Now I need to take my own cat to the vet and get him vaccinated for everything under the sun, well beyond what an indoor cat needs, because City Kitty could not only have worms but feline AIDS, leukemia, distemper, and god knows what else that I could track into the apartment. What would you do?

MyShape is a new site that’s customized to your taste and your measurements… like 29 measurements to be exact. So get out your tape measure and follow along with the little video that stops in between each until you enter a number. It’s fun! Your body type is accessed and clothing that should fit and flatter will be shown. I chose not to trust completely in the site’s size choices since I was curious to see the size and WOW do they differ from brands!
Putting some more color in my life. My wardrobe mainly consists of black, white and grey. I’ve been making a concentrated effort to choose the colorful version of something cute I see, instead of the standard neutral. It can always be paired up with a neutral I already have. Still can’t get into prints though.

I finally went to u-fab, a fabric discounter in the city, this past weekend and holy cow it’s awesome! There is no other store in Richmond that has so many contemporary prints at such great prices. The $2.99 remnants in the back were very basic. Most of the gorgeous prints (in all types of weights) were about $10-$15 a yard. I bought 2 yards of heavy duty fabric for two large floor cushions for my livingroom. The mod print for the bf and the floral for me. I think they coordinate pretty well, in a funky kinda way. $24!!! All I need is some patience to cut it, a few easy swipes through the sewing machine, and hopefully I can get my hands on a heavier natural fiber filler so they have some weight. I will post pics of the finished product soon! Washed out phone pic:

Rediscovering DnB. A looong time ago in a land far far away, I dabbled in the rave scene here in Richmond. The first big party I went to, I wandered around to the different rooms until I found music that hit me. That was Drum & Bass. A local DJ was spinning and I was mesmerized, watching the subtle movements on the records and mixer, feeling the build-ups, being blown away. I became friends with that DJ and all his other friends and for a while, Richmond was a lot of fun for me. Then as my circle of friends got bigger, drama and drugs got a bit too much for my liking and I had to move on. Either way, the music is still important to me, even though I don’t listen to it as often as I should. I would much rather go to a DnB night to dance than a hipster dance night. I forgot all about BassDrive. Click on the “web player” and listen to DJs spinning sets from all over the world!

I really enjoy Sarah Von’s blog Yes and Yes. She has recently shared two awesome things. First, THIS BLOG of Japanese cats. Second, is this great reminder to keep things in perspective:

I had been putting off getting my car inspected 10 days past the end of the month, because I had a bad feeling I was going to have some expensive repairs. I was noticing some subtle changes and they didn’t feel good. So of course, this past Thursday, I got a ticket for an expired inspection sticker. Two hours later, I was at the mechanics and sat there for over 3 hours as they collected $700 from me. In addition to a lot of minor maintainance things, a ball joint was cracked and it was pretty major. (Thank you Richmond pot holes!) Trying to look on the bright side, the car is over 8 years old and this is the first real repair I’ve had to perform. I always wanted to take a class in auto mechanics and have done quite a bit of car repair in my lifetime and I’m good about taking care of my car so, I’m counting my lucky stars and knocking on wood that it wasn’t worse.

I came about 3″ from catching a wee kitten last Friday. I was driving through my parents’ neighborhood and saw a tiny kitten sitting on the side of the road. I stopped and started walking towards it. It mewed a few times then took off to a house and hid under shrubs. After about 10 minutes of crawling around on my hands and knees under bug filled bushes with the kitten darting from one bush to another, it took off again and I didn’t see where it went. It was one of those brown stripey wild kitties and that’s exactly the kind I’ve wanted! Kinda like this:

Sex and the City 2. I do not care. As soon as Carrie took back Big after making a complete ass of her at the wedding in the first movie, I was done. Actually, I was pretty disgusted with her character the entire series for always taking him back. Low self-esteem? He was not that charming. The only one I ever really liked was Samantha. The woman had balls but seriously, has anyone ever done a tally of how many men they slept with? Hold on. Let me Google this. Ahhh, about 94 between the 4 of them.

The BP oil spill. Between rig inspectors on meth, inspectors of the actual part that broke not doing their job, Halliburton being involved, all the political back-scratching that goes on with big oil, the Coast Guard not doing their job, the Army Corps of Engineers not issuing permits or doing their job, BP openly defying the EPA, the finger-pointing, the loss of sea life, the loss of income for fishermen, the incomprehensible amount of destruction and pollution, the inaction of our president… I am at a loss for words.

Everyone getting so damned upset over Arizona’s immigration law. Once again, my political opinions will probably piss some of you off but honestly, I couldn’t give two shits. First off, I am the daughter of a legal immigrant. I am all for legal immigration. What a lot of people don’t know is that the U.S. allows more legal immigrants here than every other country combined. Things got a bit tighter after 9-11, as they should, but if you go through the proper process you’re welcome here, to get screwed by the government like everyone else. In fact, Mexico’s citizenship process is more strict than that of the U.S. We live in a country where states are afforded their own laws. Arizona (and the rest of the country) is in the midst of an illegal immigration crisis. Our budgets, job supply, and resources are getting sucked dry by people who don’t contribute to the tax base and are here illegally! Hello! What part of illegal does no one seem to understand? Is Arizona law enforcement not allowed to address an issue of legality (only with probably cause) when federal agents can walk up to anyone (w/out probable cause) and ask for papers no questions asked? The federal government has been sitting on their asses about taking any action against the flood of illegals in this country because they don’t want to lose the Hispanic vote. I congratulate AZ for doing something the rest of the country has been unwilling to address… asking for goddamn proof of citizenship in the middle of a crisis and actually doing something about it.

Losing your health insurance. I have had to make a ton of calls figuring out who sells my prescriptions for the cheapest amount (found them), calling my doctors (who I love) to see if they will still see me with a cash payment (they will), seeing if they can prescribe me generic versions (they can for one), seeing if cheaper options like Planned Parenthood carry my BC pills (they don’t), and researching other plans like health savings accounts. This is ridiculous.

Nine years ago, a friend found an abandoned kitten and brought him to my house. He was only 2 weeks old and still needed to be bottle fed. Everyone said he wouldn’t make it but for 2 months, every 4 hours, I bottle fed that kitten and he is the gigantic monster cat known as Ringo that I live with today. I want to bottle feed a kitten again soooo badly but no kitty adoption places will give them to you that tiny and young.

Excess packaging. I recently bought a new camera which meant I had to buy a bunch of other crap to go with it. The SD card I purchased could’ve fit nicely into a small size manilla envelope and would’ve cost less than $1 to ship but instead they put it in a ridiculous sized box and charged me $4. The most asinine thing though was that postcard I got so I can get it enlarged for my kitchen. It was a $1 postcard that ended up costing $5.99 after shipping. It too came in a big box. Seriously people!? What the hell!? I’m in no way on the brainwashed green train but blatant waste is just damn stupid and raping people on shipping charges is shameful.

I have soooo many blog posts bookmarked that I want to leave comments on. It’s getting ridiculous. I promise I will get to them this weekend.

Andrea from Toronto is one of my new favorite bloggers. She just participated in Cupcake Camp! I want to go!

Tretorn is a sneaker brand from Sweden that you don’t really think of very often, in the sea of huge sneaker companies. How cute are these slip-ons though? The Reva Nylons are pretty sweet too!

Art blogs are the best sources of inspiration for me. I’ve mentioned one of my favorites before – My Love for You is a Stampede of Horses. It’s modern, descriptive, interactive and just plain friendly. My other favorite is But Does it Float. I discovered it by accident and mentioned it in this post a while back and have been a faithful follower ever since. From to the titles of the posts to the images selected, it haunts me. All of the images are vastly different but they all strike a chord in me… something deep… dreadful and magical all at the same time. Check it out.

If you can somehow get your hands on some sweet stuffed Korean pancake mix (Hoddeok) give it a shot, or try a from-scratch version. They’re really easy and sooooo flippin’ good! Bad pic and I didn’t get a shot of gooey center. Oh well.

The bunny ring I posted about before Easter that quickly sold out on F21 is back! Go order it!

-

Trying to sell something on Craigslist is the worst. People are such flakes! I recently listed a big jewelry armoire that I’m not moving from my parents’ house. It’s been collecting dust and I figured I might as well get some money for it. I got a ton of interest and then when I responded to let the people know how flexible I was for a pick-up, no one got back with me to set up a time to come get it. Finally a super nice girl and I made a deal but I feel like a lot of my time was wasted by people who just like to waste time.

Mail-in rebates. I’ve heard a lot of statistics about how many people forget about them and the company ends up keeping the money that was owed to you through whatever deal you participated in. Well, I’m not one of those forgetful people. Sprint has been jerking me around for almost 2 months making B.S. excuses to not send me the $100 they owe me. From what I’ve heard from multiple people who have worked in the same industry… this type of behaviour is pretty much the standard. You really have to keep up on it. It’s finally in the mail now.
