I love the bead work of the Huichol people of  Mexico.

Artist Cathrine Martin of Our Exquisite Corpse partnered with a group of Huichol artisans to create 15 beaded skulls. All of them are sold out but they were available at LN-CC for $780 each. The beading is done on a layer of wax and each skull measures 5.25″ x 7.75″ x 5″.

My parents made me a 4 room Victorian dollhouse from a kit when I was little and my dad painstakingly made tiny wooded furniture for it.

I kind of want to redo it one of these days.

my cute little great grandmother

My great grandparents on my mom’s mom’s side used to live in an old house in Hanover County, VA. My 80 year old cousin Dot has lived in it as long as I remember. The house is a Southern historic landmark and used to be an inn during the Civil War. There’s still a carriage landing there. It was later cut in half – the other side moved to I don’t know where.

Anyhow, I grew up going there to see my cousin and my mom grew up there visiting her grandparents. My mom likes to tell me this story from time to time and it always gives me a chill.

When my mom was in her late teens, her grandfather had already passed away and her grandmother was on her death bed. She and her mom were staying at the house to take care of her. My mom was sleeping on a sofa by a window in the living room.

On the night her grandmother died, she woke up to a cool breeze coming in the window and she noticed the tiny white flowers on the bush directly outside. She fell back asleep to be woken by her mother the next morning, asking how she slept. My mom told her that she slept well and told her about the breeze. Her mom told her that the window had been painted shut since the war and she must have dreamed it.

My mom was adamant that it had really happened and when she sat up and moved her blanket, a bunch of the white flowers fell on the floor.

My grandmother was totally freaked out but my mom always thought it was a sign from her grandmother.

I’ve had the sewing itch for a while now but I couldn’t think of anything I wanted to make. I have enough pillows and they’re kinda boring to sew. Then, a few days ago an old friend emailed me asking if I could make her Halloween costume. She wants to be Wilfred the dog:

I need to get her measurements and we’re going to pick out furry fabric in a couple weeks. The pattern I’m using, I’ve already made 2 costumes from. Here’s my friend Bobby and I from 2008. I was a hamster.

It’s soooo easy and you can customize it in a lot of ways!

Soooo anyhow, this costume will be quick and I still have a desire to make something for myself. I’ve been checking out all the Spring 2012 shows coming in and I saw this top by Badgley Mischka. I am totally doing this.

I’ve never made my own pattern that required lining. I need to figure out how this puzzle is going to get put together. Brainstorming time.  Maybe a hidden side zip and sew the tie flaps into the side seams. A light synthetic blend linen? I think I’m actually going to have to sew a muslin/prototype first.
