  • Comments! I love them! Leave one and introduce yourself! When you comment, I get to see YOUR blog if you have one, and this my friends, is how great relationships begin! I just recently received a comment from Sarah whose blog yes and yes, I had never seen before and well… it’s awesome… and I’m mentioning it here! So there you go!
  • The Botany of Desire was on PBS this week and I loved it. It’s a documentary based on the book by Michael Pollan. It talks about how 4 plants that have satisfied humans (apples, potatoes, tulips and marijuana) have thrived and expanded across the world because of our efforts. If you’re into plants, into history, into genetics, into evolution, into the world, check it out. You can watch it online.
  • This is both a plus and a minus – I’m not dressing up in a costume this Halloween. It’s a plus because the planning, expense, and usually the sewing can get to be a little overwhelming. It’s a minus because costumes really bring out the nut in me and they’re soooo much fun! Here are some pics from Halloweens past -

This was a zentai tiger suit I ordered off of eBay in 2006. I cut the face out of it but was constantly having to readjust. This costume got a lot of milage at a lot of super fun parties. The nose was a pain but I loved the annonymity. It was skin tight and some chick came up and told me I was “really brave” for wearing it. Compliment? I hope so.

In 2007, I repurposed an old bridesmaid dress  and made the Bjork swan dress. Such a pain to sew! Miles of various types of white tulle strips and at the last minute I magically found a yard of white feather ribbon edging for the bodice part. That really made it.  It was great going to parties and everyone running up to you knowing who you were.

Last year, I finally made a super cuddly hamster costume after talking about it for forever. It was beyond comfortable and I loved wearing sneakers all night. I also made a blinding pink bunny suit for a friend out of the same pattern at the last minute one evening. We took over the town. Everyone wanted to hug me and I wanted to hug them back!

  • I have had this first pair of Givenchy shoes from the Spring 2010RTW collection bookmarked for almost a month but hadn’t had the time to look at the rest of the collection. The clothing (and those god-awful hats) didn’t do a thing for me but holy cow these wedges!  So ideal. Have I told you before how much I love a wedge? Like a million times! I wish affordable amazing wedges were more readily available!

  • Grilled Romaine lettuce just seems so wrong to me! I hear it’s very good though.
  • After getting my laptop back from being repaired, my external hard drive (that I backed everything up on) won’t work. (Something about partitions and all this other computer garble that I don’t plan on teaching myself.) Well, I tried to hook it up to my folks’ desktop and it too is saying that it needs to be reformatted – meaning I will lose everything. So, I downloaded a freeware version of a data recovery program and everything was working well. The items on my external were being recognized, I could see it all in front of me, then the error reports started popping up (something got corrupted which explains why it wouldn’t work on the desktop either) and just when I was ready to transfer all the items I had painstakingly hand clicked on… the “freeware” program directed me to a website to pay $50 to complete the transfer. What a flippin crock!
  • Twinings African Rooibos red tea tastes like bug spray. It seriously tastes like Raid!
  • Zombieland was a huge waste of time. The previews were incredibly misleading. There was hardly any zombie killing. Who goes to a zombie movie not wanting to see excessive zombie violence? The female characters (I hate to say it) were unnecessary - very cunning at the beginning, emo in the middle, and pathetically stupid and needing a man’s rescue at the end. The awkward emo guy was obviously cast as some poor excuse for a Michael Cera wannbe.  Bill Murray’s bloated self-indulgent cameo was terrible. Weak. So weak.

Fall in the Fan

by Lara on October 29, 2009

in geek

Last night we took a 3 hour walk around the Fan. The weather was perfect as we headed out right before the sun was setting. Not nearly enough people decorate for Halloween but that one block on Hanover Ave. was gearing up for the kiddies and it felt magical. Happy Halloween everyone!

Whether or not Halloween is on it’s way, these acrylic tumblers from Target are pretty much awesome! The skulls are clear. You can get a set of 6 online or buy them individually for about $3.

Spiders cause a visceral reaction in most people. My mother was bitten by a Brown Recluse when I was a child – which coincidently happened around the onset of her Multiple Sclerosis and we’ve always wondered if it triggered some whacked out auto-immune reaction. After the bite and recovery, spiders were destined to die when I was growing up. I still always found them to be enchanting and was proud for being the only one in my 3rd grade class brave enough to hold the tarantula on the science center field trip. My father once caught a wolf spider in a jar for me to watch, her back wriggling with babies. Every summer a giant garden spider maintains a perfect web outside the window next to my computer and I can watch for hours as she wraps up insects and feeds on them.

The boy thinks I’m a total freak for my love of taxidermy (I must have this winged kitten), and all of Laura Zindel’s ceramics.

This Swarovski crystal cuff is so much fun!

This silk tunic by Helmut Lang is subtle, with beautiful drape.

Why not adorn an odd spot in your home with a preserved Peruvian tarantula? :)

Maybe it’s the goth girl still lingering inside of me but, I think spiders are wonderful!

Happy Halloween!

Cute Overload/Martha pet costume extravaganza!

Happy Halloween everyone! I love the entire week before Halloween and I hope everyone has excreted every drop of joy out of it! This past Sunday I went to karaoke in my hamster costume with my friend Bobby in the shocking pink bunny costume we made and even though we were the only ones dressed up, it was magical and fun and we made people smile.

Wednesday night I paid an impromptu visit to some friends at a bar where they were having a super-hero night and I got to use an awesome camera and document most of the night. So many smiles and so many cheers as we ran around the streets taking random adventure pictures.

Tonight I will be paying a few favorite places a visit with a friend just to see what everyone else is wearing and make some new friends and then we’re heading to our usual Hollaween party! Holla! Hope everyone stays safe, has fun and lets their hair down for the night! Goodness knows we need it!

Check out Joshua Hoffine’s ultra scary photography!!!!

kiddies in gas masks

In the spirit of Halloween and all that is creepy – I’m not sure if anything is more deeply disturbing than this image. Our grandparents lived through this time.

Check out the Mickey Mouse mask from the WW2 era!

  • Marimekko designs have been made into stylish desktop wallpaper from their legendary fabric designs, available for free!
  • The Neiman Marcus Christmas book is online… it’s fun to pretend.
  • I am totally into this graphic “Funny Bones” rug by FLOR.
  • I don’t know who Annelie Carlström is but I just bought her sweatshirt at H&M. Apparently, H&M is featuring “up-and-coming creative talents. This piece is part of a collection designed by various illustrators.” (That’s what the fancy tag said in 6 different languages.) Upon further investigation it’s part of her graduation project while at Beckmans School of Design in Sweden. God, I love this sooooo much!
  • I adore Lladró designs when human figures are not involved. Their new Naturofantastic collection is so similar to the plant life in the movie Fantastic Planet, I’m wondering if there isn’t some connection!

  • Tape Findings - mp3s of found cassettes… hilarious!
  • Norwegian graffiti feels strangely appropriate displayed in the idyllic landscapes.
  • Target has black leather elbow length gloves for $20 in store- not online yet.
  • Actor Dan Aykroyd’s new Crystal Head vodka is right in time for Halloween! How great it this bottle?

  • Going to Payless to pick up my Alice + Olivia Rivington ankle boots and finding them to be horrible – the quality, feel, everything – then getting my money refunded and spending that $50 at Target on 7 adorable tops from the clearance racks! Much more satisfying and rewarding!

  • Kate Moss immortalized in gold at the British Museum – “Siren“? I think not.

  • Portraits of people who make clothing out of their dog’s fur. My god.
  • You pay extra to have these guys make your jeans look worn-in!
  • Despicable people who steal your blog content and place it on their crappy irrelevent blogs! I am soooo sick of the nastiness that lurks on the internet!

rabbit children

by Lara on September 26, 2008

in photo friday

I love love love these costumes! I bet that little white rabbit stole the show!

There’s something about animal costumes that truly makes me happy. My mother used to make all my halloween outfits when I was a child and one was a furry pink bunny. The house was covered with pink fluff for a week! I won a department store costume contest and was on the news at a local Halloween festival in Shockoe Slip and refused to get out of character… just hopped through the entire interview. There was also the cat costume which I brought out years later and barely fit into for a school competition, which also won first place, after I went crazy with improv. Something wild that lurks deep inside manages to rise out of me when I am in a costume. All the more better if my face is concealed in some way, like the muzzle I wore with my tiger suit 2 years ago… there’s something about the anonymity of costumes and the revelry of strangers all trying to free a part of themselves on Halloween that makes it one of the most special times of the year.

One day, if I have children, their wardrobes will be purchased for the entire year at Halloween… animal costumes year round until they can protest!
