I’ve had the sewing itch for a while now but I couldn’t think of anything I wanted to make. I have enough pillows and they’re kinda boring to sew. Then, a few days ago an old friend emailed me asking if I could make her Halloween costume. She wants to be Wilfred the dog:

How cute right?
I need to get her measurements and we’re going to pick out furry fabric in a couple weeks. The pattern I’m using, I’ve already made 2 costumes from. Here’s my friend Bobby and I from 2008. I was a hamster.

It’s soooo easy and you can customize it in a lot of ways!

Soooo anyhow, this costume will be quick and I still have a desire to make something for myself. I’ve been checking out all the Spring 2012 shows coming in and I saw this top by Badgley Mischka. I am totally doing this.

I’ve never made my own pattern that required lining. I need to figure out how this puzzle is going to get put together. Brainstorming time. Maybe a hidden side zip and sew the tie flaps into the side seams. A light synthetic blend linen? I think I’m actually going to have to sew a muslin/prototype first.
Wish me luck!
Has Christian Louboutin been perusing the aisles of Michael’s crafts?

$1,595!!!!

From the 2011 Sept issue of Harper’s Bazaar
So, uhm, yeah… if any of you want something like this, let me know. I can make this happen and it won’t be $1600.
I cleaned out my closet a few days ago and rediscovered a pair of jeans I bought at the end of last summer. They’re from Old Navy and I got them on extra clearance clearance for less than $5.
They’re “The Flirt” denim style – a mid rise fit that I’m really loving. (It’s amazing how much slimmer you look when the muffin top is eliminated.)
These particular jeans are 98% cotton, 2% spandex. Super soft, comfy, with a little give. You also don’t get plumber butt when you bend over! They were a special pair offered, with faded white paint speckles and a flare leg.
So here I am in all my bloated glory!

Now what I don’t get is Old Navy’s sizes.
First off, their vanity sizing is ridiculous. I’m roughly a size 6-8, and these are a size 4 and still have some room when I’m pms-ing.
Second, their size chart is bananas because I’m now a 38-28-38 (Mötley Crüe’s ideal size! Ha!) and I’m fitting in a size 4 when they say I should be in an 8.
Oh! These were also “regular” inseam but measured the same as what they say is “short”. WTF?
I really want to try their wide legged trouser version:

These are just 1% spandex. That could make a HUGE difference. It’s a shame I have to try on every damn thing in-store instead of just ordering online. Could stores be a bit more consistent with their denim lines and size charts?
I got this strange legalese email from Moxsie, an online indie apparel shop I had purchased from before. They’re going out of business and liquidating everything. So of course, I had to check out the sale. Not much was doing it for me except for a pair of leather OTK boots. It’s friggin 90 degrees outside and I was contemplating boots.
Well, how else was I going to get a pair of $230 leather Kelsi Dagger boots for $39.50?!! I slept on it and decided if they were still available in my size, I’d order them. They’ll be here in a few days! There are no returns on anything so, if they don’t work out, I’ll eBay em!

For the first time in a year, I managed to have a 3-day weekend and enjoyed every bit of it.
No cleaning… the bf did on Friday for me! Hot damn!
I barely cooked- the AC in the kitchen died and we need a new one. I did melt on Monday evening and cooked a big dinner – apricot/mustard pork tenderloin, mashed sweet potatoes, sauteed mushrooms and a small salad.
I slept in a bit and went shopping alone a few times and didn’t feel rushed.
We went to the farmer’s market and SPCA. I may take a 1.5 hour class to be a volunteer/foster there so I will have direct access to wee kittens. I may just talk to my vet.
We went for a late night walk and I took some pics in the dark, and in some windows, since no one believes in curtains in this town:

We shared a sundae for dinner on Sunday at Bev’s and sang “Sundae Yummy Sundae“:

I got a brand new mustard corduroy skirt from J. Crew for $6 at Second Debut (fancy pants Goodwill).

At Old Navy, I grabbed a bunch of stuff for the bf on sale and this one-piece. I’m going tubing with his family soon and needed something modest. I really love it! The stripes are grey. It’s sold out online.

A lady was placing these dresses on the Target clearance rack. I got it in black. The fabric doesn’t stretch. Still full price online.

And that’s it! How was your weekend? Did you score any good deals?
The Ultra 10 collection is 10 items of clothing that become your core wardrobe for a year. All made-to-order and of organic and recycled fabrics, they will also mend and recycle your collection when you’re done with them – plus offer you a new set in a year at a discount. The total for the whole collection is $918.

You get what technically amounts to 15 pieces as a few are multifunctional because of length and zippers:
vest * backless top * cropped top * white shirt/dress * skirt * top/dress * stretch pants * cotton trousers * 2-in-1 blazer * 3-in-1 dress-jacket-skirt

I think this is a pretty interesting concept since this isn’t supposed to be an addition to your existing wardrobe. This is meant to be your core for an entire year. They’re encouraging buyers to participate in a challenge and share how you mix up the pieces. There’s currently only one participant.
I like the overall look of the pieces except for the crop top but; I couldn’t see myself wearing this as my core wardrobe for a year. The price really isn’t that bad when you think about it. Of course you don’t know what the pieces actually feel like or how they’re constructed.
I would worry about wear and tear, constantly laundering the pieces which will fade them, and basically being bored.
I’m also not the most eco-minded person out there, while I do love simplicity in my home. Then, the more I think about it, I do kinda go to my same fave pieces over and over. Could I make these new faves? I just don’t know. It seems more like the perfect travel wardrobe to me.
Could you do it?
Today we went to the SOJ market. It was hot as hell and we ate delicious grass-fed burgers with spinach, caramelized onions and blue cheese from Belmont Butchery’s cart Meat on the Street in the blistering sun. I was charmed by the old man who sells honey and ran into a few friends. Then we went to the SPCA for a kitten but none of them were doing it for me, except for this one little boy cat but I really want a girl.
This is what I wore – which got a ton of compliments!

I am so short-waisted! With most of my jeans being low-slung I sometimes forget where my real waist is. It’s up there!
thin white tank, navy & white maxi skirt from F21 I bought back in January, old belt, Franco Sarto cone heel sandals.
Day 3 of the dress/skirt challenge.
Today is laundry day and I can’t manage to take a self-timed pic of myself without my head cut off. Anyhoo… nothing exciting here. My fave horse top and an oooooold skirt from Express.

Nibbles photobomb!
So yeah, this isn’t what I planned on wearing. I had this cute grey dress in mind but when I put it on this morning, my bewbs were flattened. I had only worn and washed it once before so, it shrunk. It was this one from the Target Go International line in 2008 (without the tee). So, if you’re a size 4-6 with a small chest, let me know and I’ll mail it to you!

So, digging around in my closet, I realized most of my skirts and dresses are super dressy! Uh oh!
Day 2 of the skirt/dress Summer challenge.
I’ve had this long jersey dress for years and maybe wore it twice. It came from Target and although it requires a strapless bra, it’s beyond comfortable. I feel like I’m padding around in a nightgown.

After a dozen failed attempts with the self-timer this is what I’m left with. You get the idea. Yes, I just ripped my hair out of a bun. No, I haven’t washed my hair in days. Also, this is in my dad’s showroom/living room. He made all the furniture.
When I went to private school, our skirts had to be below the knee. Of course, I wore everything to the floor. It was the 90s and that was the style. This is me at about 14 years old in a dress I paid a crazy amount for at that age. It came from a locally owned hippie shop called Picasso Moon. The son of the owners worked there and at the time, he was the most beautiful creature I’d ever seen, but he was gay. His name was Steve and we actually became great friends about 10 years later. Anyhow, my mom would go to Ben Franklin Crafts and I would browse Picasso Moon and pine away over Steve. I wore this dress until it was in shreds, held together with a rainbow of thread. (I still have and wear those Chucks.)

There’s something kinda magical about a big flowing dress you can wave around, hike up, and prance in.
