  • Camelias are blooming and there are buds on some trees in Richmond!

  • Warmer weather makes me want to eat like this every day.

  • Like spirograph designs, I am really digging this string work for a wall. It would take a bit of time to map out a perfect circle and place all the nails neatly but it is so flippin neat and you could do any type of design in any color.

  • I love wall decals and I love rodents. These are adorable!

get these here! I just got 2!

  • Alzheimer’s. It sucks beyond anything I thought that sucked could suck. My mom is experiencing the beginning stages of it now. The double-edged sword of her already struggling with MS, is that it’s better that she’s immobile because she would probably wander off or set the house on fire. Right now, she gets fixated on things. For the past six months it’s been her checking account, which I manage. She can’t remember her balance, I have to tell her every day, she doesn’t believe me, we have to call the bank, she thinks there are mystery checks from unknown sources tucked away in drawers that I have to dig through every day to keep her from having a fit… all while trying very hard not to have a fit myself. Before the money stuff, there were mysterious things in the bed with her under the covers that I had to constantly show her weren’t there. There was the broken mirror she said she had cut herself with, the strange plastic bits, the wire wrapped around her finger, her thinking she had pulled her catheter out – all this and she knows intellectually that she can’t move but reality separates itself from her brain every day. This went on for 2 years until we figured out what was really going on. Like I said, it sucks.
  • Spring is coming! Can you feel it!? I have a few fashion requests for the general public. Can we all try to avoid wearing scarves when it’s hot outside and can everyone stay away from boat shoes? Oh, and dirty looking dudes in sleazy tank tops… stop the madness. Thanks guys.

drawers

in decor

With limited closet space and cold weather arriving, I have been thinking about dressers and chests of drawers. I have a ton of warm clothing I still need to bring over to the apartment and I have no place to put it all. My father makes reproduction Chippendale furniture and made me a huge dresser when I was little. It’s beautiful but really not my style and I have been reluctant to haul that monstrous mahogany piece over. Yesterday on Design Milk, I fell in love with this chest by SylvanSF. Their website is a dead end, difficult to look at individual pieces and prices are nowhere to be found. Each piece is a limited edition and everything is made from unique materials like horn, bone, leathers, and exotic veneers. Obviously, I could never afford any of it but, I just thought I’d share this gorgeous chest. The size is perfect and so is the pattern.

This chest is so decadent and despite the fact that it’s gold, it’s muted and warm and would blend in any decor without being garrish.

My bf is a huge lover of squids and whales and kind of oohed and ahhed when I showed him this chest.

The shapes are simple and with a some patience I think someone could diy something similar to any of these pieces for their home. There are tons of metalic paints and antiquing finishes/techniques out there. There are also continuous walpaper stencils in abbundance on the interwebs and I know I’ve seen some geometrics. Maybe you could find an intricate wall decal and simply cut accross it carefully and apply it to a set of drawers you already have.

decals

I’ve been seeing a lot of wall decals lately and even though I don’t have any personal experience with them, I think they’re fantastic! Considering the labor involved to apply wallpaper that inevitably is going to become dated and will be an enormous pain to remove… I think removable (so they say) wall decals could be a fun way to add some interest to your interior. They are also incredibly inexpensive. Most are made from latex and are not reusable once removed so you better have a plan and a steady hand. Here are some of my favorites. (I don’t know why I gravitated towards a lot of organic designs for this post but there are plenty of graphic ones out there too!)

First off, this is from a Swedish design blog and I really have no idea if this a decal or not. It should be. I LOVE this! (click for larger)

These Elly Nelly “wall graphics” are from an etsy-like site called Supermarket that you really need to check out. You can order them in a multitude of colors and some are quite whimsical and suitable for a child’s room.

Not just limited to walls either!

This decal inspiration is from an actual art exhibit called “Human Nature” by Peter Holst Henckel. I love the large format and the layering of art on top. The close placement of the art is intriguing as well. (via Apartment Therapy)

Blik Surface Graphics has a really nice selection but it’s their Threadless designs that take the cake. They also feature other artists as well as students from the Savannah College of Art and Design and the classic designs.

Really, I could post a few dozen different wall decal companies online right now. It’s an enormous market catering to those who want to personalize a temporary situation or are just in no mood to deal with a major decorating overhaul. It may take a bit of digging to find exactly what you’re looking for. An etsy search for “wall decal” is bursting at the seams with designs that rival established online stores.

Oh, and don’t forget about stencils… god… so many stencils out there! Check out this new book by stencil master Ed Roth, if you don’t mind a little paint!
