Here’s to starting off a new week that won’t try to kill me like last week did! There are no words for how every day managed to take a giant crap on my mood. I got all my days mixed up and forgot Photo Friday and here it is Sunday and I’m posting +&-. I think I’m going to take a few days off. All of you are enjoying your long weekend anyways so, whatever.

Rumors were abound that Lanvin would be doing a capsule line for H&M and it finally was confirmed that it will be released on November 20th. If it’s anything like the Comme des Garcons collection for H&M, it will probably be way out of my budget and quickly sold out. I’m still excited to see what kind of drapey goodness they’ll have! Previews will be revealed and flooding the interwebs on November 2nd.

really long but very interesting article on linguistics

When your language routinely obliges you to specify certain types of information, it forces you to be attentive to certain details in the world and to certain aspects of experience that speakers of other languages may not be required to think about all the time. And since such habits of speech are cultivated from the earliest age, it is only natural that they can settle into habits of mind that go beyond language itself, affecting your experiences, perceptions, associations, feelings, memories and orientation in the world.

From a 1940s issue of Varsity Magazine, are you a good roommate? (via)

METAL ART CLAY!!! I had never heard of this stuff before but holy cow it sounds awesome! It’s tiny bits of metal mixed with a clay compound. Like clay, you can mold it into anything you want. Once it’s fired, the binding agent burns off leaving you with your metal piece. Learn all about it here. The silver kind can be fired on a gas stove top or with a butane torch! Kinda pricey though.

Every Labor Day weekend, my dad drives to Hillsville. VA, where the entire town turns into an antique show. I used to go with both of my parents when I was a kid. Now I stay at my parents’ house to take care of my mom. This weekend we ordered her a new memory foam mattress. This means I had to get the hydraulic lift out of the basement, put her in a harness, strap her onto the lift and crank her ass out of her old bed, carefully push her into the other bedroom hanging like a slab of beef, lower her onto the other bed and wait for the delivery. I got the new bed ready and hauled her back to her fresh happy bed. Totally ridiculous. She’s loving the new mattress though. Another glamorous day in the life.

I wanted to clear something up… an addendum if you will. You know all that lovey dovey stuff I said about relationships last week? Well it totally doesn’t count when you’re PMSing, irritable, and hormonal as hell. I’m trying. Really. I truly hate cashing in on exceptions made for women but my god have I been a ball of hormones. This little article on how to make your marriage divorce-proof was pretty cute though. It still didn’t cheer me up.

Who knew that when you get renter’s insurance, it won’t cover your damaged goods from a roof leak or the ceiling falling in, or a toilet backing up? I sure as shit didn’t know this! Our claim for the bf’s water damaged TV was denied because ALL renter’s insurance policies (at least in the state of Virginia) don’t cover damage from occurrences that could’ve been prevented by proper maintenance on the part of your landlord. I find this to be ridiculous because how can anyone be expected to constantly do preemptive maintenance? The reasoning behind it is that why would a landlord ever do maintenance if insurance will always pay for damage? My answer to this is, no one would rent from crappy landlords! Oh well, we’re screwed and the policy did indeed state this in a way that a true weasel would be proud of. Now, if a gust of wind blows off our roof, a meteor engulfs the property in flames, or an escaped elephant crashes into our building… totally covered. Natural and freak disasters? No problem. Good to know. Now, we tread lightly in taking this up with the landlord… or we look into the statute of limitations and deal with him after we move to another place. As much trouble as our place was in the beginning, we finally have it just the way we want it, it’s such a deal and dammit, I don’t want to move again any time soon!

I like to consider myself a girl’s girl, meaning I pride myself in being the type of woman that other women can trust and who will make them feel comfortable, because I am no threat. Example: say a dear male friend of mine introduces me to his girlfriend. I will probably end up talking to her more than him, and definitely look at both of them when talking, trying to make her feel included and not threatened. Out of respect for their relationship and her own femaleness, I want her to trust me and not cause insecurity problems for my friend. I would also always expect her to be involved in hangouts and would extend the invite to her. I absolutely hate women who flirt with married/taken men. I completely cut off a close friend of years who drunkenly made a pass at my bf ( because when you’re drunk, you still know what you’re doing when you’re doing it and it’s been a year and she never once called to apologize so she can go to hell). I also don’t respond well to my bf’s female friends who don’t include me, are intrusive and even rude. I can spot a woman who isn’t a “girl’s girl” a mile away and this elephant never forgets. That’s all I have to say about that.

I’ve been playing around with headers for the blog ever since Thesis updated with an easy header uploader. I’ll probably be changing them on the regular since I get bored pretty easily. Also, ever since I downloaded PhotoMix and realized I could add text, I’ve been back to downloading free fonts like a maniac. I had thousands of fonts when I was a teen but lost them all in The Great Crash of 1998. What. A. Dork. (I had +/- 30 pen pals at one time and took my letter writing seriously.) Fontspace is my favorite source for free fonts since they have everything and you can type your own text in and see what it will look like as you browse.

This great Tom Binns cuff has the lyrics to The Smiths classic song, “How Soon is Now?” engraved on it. Nowhere in the description at Net-A-Porter do they attribute the song. I think they should. (Update – they added the song info! Yay!)

So, you know the bf’s baby got fried by a roof leak on August 5th… his baby being a 100-lb wall-mounted 50″ flat screen plasma TV that he just bough in May. Well… I calmed him down in the middle of the crisis with the reassurance that we have renter’s insurance. “It’s okay honey! We’re covered! We’re responsible adults and covered our asses!” I filed a claim, the adjuster came out, they contacted the landlord to confirm damage, etc. Everything seemed to be rolling along just fine until a woman called to tell me that because there wasn’t an actual hole in the ROOF, but rather flashing that needed to be re-tarred, we weren’t covered. Okay. What? I lost it. I could feel violent rage surging through every cell in my body. I cut her off and launched into a tirade, “Oh, I get it. This is one of your weaselly loopholes to get out of paying for our damage. Okay well, I need to calm down before we discuss this any further but I can promise you that I will not be renewing our policy with Allstate and I will NEVER seek out your services for any other property I may need insured in the future!” and I hung up on her. The bf and I looked over the policy and there was nothing stating any of this crap. An hour later and I am still vibrating on the inside but I will definitely be calling someone else tomorrow and figuring out this load of total bullshit. (I swear to god, it just never quits!)

Ask and ye shall receive. I have slowly [finally grown up and] come to the realization that men are not mind readers. No way, right? It is soooo much easier to simply ask for what I want. Feeling overwhelmed with household duties? Ask him to wash the dishes. Feeling frisky? Pounce. Need some alone time? Make it happen. Want a romantic evening out? Make the reservations. Instead of building up resentment and tension, living together has become a lot easier. Showing appreciation for all the little things instead of complaining, not asking him to help with chores when he’s in the middle of something, warning him ahead of time and not springing things/requests/moods on him… these little actions have made for quite the peaceful happy home. I’m getting it all in return as well! Funny how that works out. (PS – What’s with the commercials where the woman stands there holding a full trash bag while her man is watching a game? Take the damn trash out yourself!)

Seriously. This post reminds me of when Jen’s dear cat Cleo died about 10 years ago and we buried her in a friend’s back yard. Jen and I (during the grunge days) used to say we wanted Mother Love Bone’s Chloe Dancer played at our funerals but instead we burst into CLEO Dancer as we stood by her little grave and everything was okay. (Oh and I totally started boohooing for Cleo when I heard that song again.)

Sometimes you need a visual to imagine putting different colors together. For your wardrobe, your home, projects, anything… this little tool is a lot of fun!

An enviable birthday gift haul. Good grief.

More reasons why I love TJ Maxx/Marshall’s – I got this glowing blue rocks glass for the bf (last one – we keep breaking all the cool glasses), an aqua Kuhn Rikon 12″ non-stick pan (the non-stick of our old pan died), and a Kenneth Cole wallet (my old one was soooo funky) for less than $30. (Oh and an extra pair of cute pink tweezers because I have plucking problems.)

Another great artist via My Love For You… this painting is by Kristine Moran. I have this weird habit of deconstructing everything beautiful I see to assess if I could do it myself. This is completely beyond me.

Alas, I won’t be making it to New York Fashion Week this September. I told myself last year that I would go this year but it’s not in the cards/budget. To rub salt in the wound, I actually got invited to a few things this time around and didn’t even register for a press pass! Argh! I don’t like to make promises I don’t know if I can keep but I really really want to try harder to make it next year!

We have been dragging ass with some weird bug for over a week now. I feel achy, slightly feverish, eyes burning, bronchial tightness. We’ve been going to bed before 10pm most nights and have wasted 2 free weekends that could’ve been filled with fun, instead laying around doing nothing. I saw this picture on Saturday when I was feeling like crap and started laughing hysterically then started sobbing uncontrollably. Sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Dear People Who Sell Shoes Online, Please quit it with only offering whole sizes. That is so weak! I am a true-to-size 6.5. I cannot squeeze into a 6 and a size 7 will fall off my feet. You are losing out on a huge customer base and I have yet to discover what you are gaining from this nonsense. Just knock it off! Thanks, Me.

This past Tuesday I got a wild hair and finally redid our bathroom floor. Much like the situation in our kitchen, it was a mess but much more livable. The landlord has hired some real asshats to do work in this building. We had black marble vinyl tiles (Who am I? Liberace?). They were laid down sloppily and there were ripples. I removed up to three layers of old flooring in some spots! We also have a claw foot tub and they never once managed to put the flooring under it! Who does that? It never felt totally clean. I understand older Victorian homes in the Fan district are full of these charming little qualities (this is a college town so why is the landlord gonna care?) and I knew our apartment was a diamond in the rough but come the hell on! Do a good job when you fix something! I got three boxes of discounted out-of-print peel & stick tiles from the same weird place I got the kitchen tiles from. The only neutral thing they had was a grey stone-like pattern. Fine. If I weren’t renting, I wouldn’t put this pattern in my home (or peel & stick tiles for that matter) but whatever. It’s clean. It’s bright. It’s done. (I still need to crawl on the floor to reach and paint the neglected trim beside the tub and repaint the claw feet.) Decades of funk have been removed from my home. $27 and 5 hours of work. (Oh, and my crappy little vacuum decided to fart a dust cloud so, 1 hour of that was spent letting the dust settle and then wiping down every surface in there. Fun.)

I got approached to do my first product review and I’m really pleased with how it all went down. No one tried to sway me into a positive review nor did they ask for any specifics other than the links I already had in mind. I was compensated with being able to pick out a couple products I adore. It was a lot of fun and I hope to do it more often for companies that I believe in. Blogging about fashion is pretty much a giant product review anyhow so it only makes sense! The post is coming soon so keep an eye out!

Here’s a big fat review right here – the (corded so it doesn’t run out of steam, heh heh) Shark Steam Mop. I am so very in love with this thing! Get a gallon of distilled water and go to town. The pads are machine washable. The first time you use it, you may get some streaking from all the residue other cleaners have left behind. For $60, this eliminates chemicals and replacement pads a la Swiffer and your floors are sanitized by the power of scalding steam.

This blog has been at a new host for over a week now and I love it! There’s a lot more you can do with the WordPress.org platform on your own paid hosting site regarding plug-ins/widgets, ads, backups, etc. If any of you need advice on switching over from WordPress.com to the .org platform, please feel free to leave a comment or send an email. I will gladly walk you through the process. It does take a week to transfer over an existing domain. Ugh.

Isn’t this jewelry catchall adorable? Find it here.

I don’t have Photoshop so I was looking for something similar to Polyvore where I could add pictures to make a collage of sorts. Snapfiles is where I always go to find freeware software and it’s where I found FotoMix. I think a lot of you will enjoy using it. It’s super easy to figure out. The white background works well for the Polyvore style layouts. I also got Poladroid. It will make any picture look like a Polaroid! You can play with the settings for smudges and tilts. Here’s my first one. God I love her makeup! (at Katie Gallagher)

Finally switched from IE to Firefox. I feel so 2005… like finally giving up an AOL or Hotmail email address.

Oh! I found out that the cholesterol medication Lipitor can cause anterograde amnesia (unable to form new memories), which is exactly what my mom has been experiencing for a frustrating 2+ years now. I talked to her doctor and they switched her to something else. Keep your fingers crossed that this mess will settle down since we were seriously thinking it was Alzheimer’s or dementia.

I’ve been pondering the time wasted on over-explaining and dumbing down. Lately, there’s been a radio commercial asking people to bring their Civil War memorabilia to a show like Antiques Roadshow. They say that they want to hear your stories, where it came from, family history etc. I wondered why they wasted radio time when they could have just said, “prepare to give provenance”. I really dislike when people tease the use of a “five dollar word“. Those beautiful concise words that sum up entire concepts are my favorite! (Is there a word for that?) I think when you cater to a deficiency, you encourage it. Why is it so hard to look things up and learn something new instead of complaining when someone is proficient with the English language? PS: my friend MJ‘s boss sent her this and I just about died (I love semicolons):

I’m seriously thinking about buying a foreclosure home. Not now (maybe in a few years) but I’m researching FHA loans and the entire process. It’s a serious long-term goal I’m setting for myself. It’s too far off for the bf to panic but my parents are being super supportive. Considering my mom was a real estate agent & FHA inspector and my father owns a construction company, I have access to tools, discounted supplies, advice and help. We’re a land investment type of family. I’ve stepped up my game on saving up for a down payment. I’m getting my ducks in a row all Suze Orman style over here! Whether we’d like to live in the home or flip it after some fixing up, this will all be based on situation, location and the state of the property (and the economy) upon purchase. At this point, it’s all about patience, saving up and research. Scary exciting stuff!

I finally went to the South of the James Farmer’s Market. I am in love with that place and so glad it’s going on until December 4th! I bought grass-fed beef from a local farmer for cheaper than at the grocery store. (It comes frozen and sealed so you can make it back home safely.) We bought beautiful heirloom cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, blackberries, and had tacos and breakfast burritos. I’m getting flowers, bread and more next time! Perfect way to throw together a special weekend dinner and get yourself out of the house on a Saturday morning. Here’s a Flickr pool of Richmond farmer’s market photos.

This particular comic is wonderful! It compares Orwell and Huxley’s fears for our future. Yeah, we’re screwed.

For all you suckers out there (I’m one of them), aren’t these lipsticks adorable? Of course, after a few uses, they’ve lost their charm but good grief!
The bf went out of town two weekends ago. While he was gone, I picked up a box of his favorite chocolates.
I don’t own a scale and judge my weight by my jeans. There’s no denying they’ve been a bit snug lately but the cold hard truth hurts. I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago and got weighed. I’m back to the most I ever weighed, about 2 years ago- 128lbs. Two years ago it was sitting on my ass drinking beer. This time, I barely drink, and it’s from sitting on my ass and bad food choices. This may not be a big deal to some of you but it’s kind of a big deal to me. I like the way I feel and look when I’m around 120. My body does not like this extra weight. My skin changes. I physically feel like yuck. I’m only 5’1″ and it means that if I don’t reign it in, I have to buy new clothes and I am NOT buying a new wardrobe because of laziness and shoving cheese in my face. Things have gotten real around here in the food department. It’s salad time but, I hate the gym. Hate it. I would rather all that sweat and effort have some instant results so, hard labor is more my style. Yard work, psychotic cleaning, etc. It’s on.

We had a big rainstorm on Thursday and on the sofa, while I was being a dork on my laptop and the bf was being a dork on his Xbox, we heard a loud pop. The bf saw a flash of light and the TV cut off then back on. We sat stunned for a second wtf-ing a lot and then ran to check it out. Water. From the ceiling. Leaking. On the 50″ plasma TV the bf bought himself after his tax refund. His baby. Fuck. It’s still working but of course something has been fried. How crucial? No clue. Thank god for renter’s insurance. I’m gonna make a call on Monday and see what we need to do. Oh, and the landlord needs to fix that leak.

UPDATE:: Not even an hour after I posted this, I finally got a real response from my last message to WordPress from what actually sounded like a human being! What needed to be fixed was fixed and I now have access to my domain! I also received an email from the super nice guy who also left a comment here. He gave me some extra info and was really understanding. I have updated this post so many times, softening some of my anger because my particular problem was certainly unique and does not apply to the overall use of WordPress.com, which I have really enjoyed up until this point. I still hold firm to my upset over the fact that many messages to them were not truly read and addressed until I got ugly with them. Unfortunately raising some hell has been the only way I get any real customer service these days.

Now, I have to go through the process of transferring and waiting and moving everything over. Wish me luck!

******

If you follow my tweets you’ll know the hell I’ve been experiencing for over a week now. Okay, I’m going to go on a bit of a tangent here and maybe you will learn something for your own blogging experience. (Maybe I’ll get some goddamn help if someone on WordPress sees this.)

First off to explain a bit, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two totally different things. WordPress.org is pretty much the free interface/program/software/whatever that people upload to their own webhost to make blog writing easier. It’s the nice and neat template. WordPress.com is the site where you can use that same template and also blog for free. They host your blog w/out charging you (like Blogger and all the other free blogging sites out there, although I do think Blogger allows ads.) Your blog’s web address will be blahblah.wordpress.com unless you pay them for your own domain without the wordpress part at the end. I purchased mymilkglassheart.com for a year from WordPress.com.

What I didn’t know upon starting this blog almost 2 years ago was 1) if I would stick with it 2) if anyone would read it 3) you can’t have paid ads on WordPress.com 4) you can’t upload cool plugins on WordPress.com. Now that I have stuck with it and actually have readers and opportunities to get some ads up in here, I realized I needed to switch all of my content over to a new host to make some monies off my hard work.

So I cancelled my domain with WordPress (going back to mymilkglassheart.wordpress.com) thinking I would then just register my domain with Bluehost, where I was moving to. Only problem, my domain doesn’t expire for a few more months and WordPress.com was still redirecting to my blog if you tried to go to mymilkglassheart.com. Essentially, my domain was in limbo but I couldn’t access it or transfer it. This is a unique situation and none of their support addressed this problem.

Let’s just talk about WordPress.com’s support. IT SUCKS! There are no phone numbers or direct email addresses. You go to their support section, try to figure out your problem with info they’ve already provided and then, as a last resort, you send a message through a form. These messages I sent apparently went to illiterate robots who (eventually) sent me worthless links to their support forums that didn’t help, even though I told them that the support forums didn’t cover my concerns, and that the buttons they said should be on my control panel/dashboard didn’t exist.

Upon further investigation and a phone call to wonderful, competent, helpful 24-7/365 1-800# Bluehost, trying to figure all this crap out when things I tried to do just wouldn’t work, I found out that when you buy a domain from WordPress, they use a third-party. They don’t tell you this. I also found out through Bluehost that my domain was managed by Wild West Domains. I looked them up and called, hoping to circumvent WordPress. They also have excellent customer service and reinstated the [limited] access to my domain on WordPress after I had cancelled. I hoped that would help but it didn’t. Still, the access Iwas supposed to have to my domain on WordPress.com, this access they said wad supposed to be available (with screenshots and everything) on their support forums DID NOT EXIST!

I needed my EPP Authorization Code to transfer my domain to Bluehost. An EPP Authorization Code is essentially the SS# to your domain. It allows you to take it anywhere you want. Apparently there have been many complaints online about hosts holding them hostage. Think of it like this: Pepsi registers the domain Pepsi.com. Like a patent, this domain will eventually expire and unless their people keep on top of this, someone else can come along, buy it and then Pepsi will have to buy it back from them at whatever price. Hosts have total access to expiration dates and times. They can swipe up expiring domains like a vulture at a patent office. Honestly, no one wants my stupid domain. It’s just become dirty policy to hold the EPP codes hostage.

It is a good idea when purchasing a domain to get your EPP Code right off the bat and store it somewhere safely. You may have serious issues with your host and need to transfer. It’s also your RIGHT to have it. You paid for your domain. You own it. You should have all information regarding it.

So I am now patiently waiting for a god damn human being to contact me from WordPress to give me what I need. I have sent another message to them through their form without any direct keywords. Their bots have essentially ignored it. I have also had the exact same bullshit responses from their Twitter account.

Here’s my last killer message to them:

This is the 4th time I have contacted support with a serious issue I need to have resolved in a timely manner. I have received two automatic responses with links that are worthless to me. If someone had actually read my complaints/problems they clearly would not have sent the support forum links that do not answer my questions.

I have never experienced such terrible support in my life. I would appreciate an email from a REAL human being who will help me with the issue I am having that CANNOT be addressed by any of the support options available. Believe me, I have looked and exhausted all other options.

If I don’t receive real help in regards to obtaining the access and rights to something I have paid you for, I will have no other choice but to file a formal complaint with InterNIC.

Sincerely,
Lara

If I don’t get the help I need soon, I am going to hunt high and low for any corporate contact information and I will hound those bastards like you would not believe. I also plan on filing a complaint with InterNIC. In tweeting about my issues, I got a response from a guy telling me it took him 6 months to get access to his own domain, that he paid for from Lycos. He called every extension in their office until someone finally helped him. This is not an isolated problem.

So my advice to you lovely bloggers out there… if you are serious about making something bigger out of your blog, if you want control of your own work and domain, want to control the appearance and add-ons of your blog, and maybe you would even eventually like to get paid advertising on your blog, get the hell off the free sites. They are perfectly fine for the casual blogger, like I started off as. If your readership begins to get larger and you are committed to delivering consistent content, go ahead and pay for hosting from whatever service offers you the server storage space you need, and whatever other features sound good to you. Look for 99.9% up times. Look for good reviews and 24-7 customer service. Ask around. Get recommendations. Go ahead and upload the WordPress software to your host site. It’s excellent. Just stay off the free hosting sites. Also register your domain with a reputable registry site and get that EPP code immediately.

Also, if you can offer any advice about my current issue, I would greatly appreciate it! If nothing happens, I’m stuck here until my domain expires. I’ll be damned if I’m ordering new MOO cards!

PS: Save your snarky comments about how I should’ve hired a web developer. Seriously? I guess I should hire a publisher to handle my photo albums. Poor access to customer service is a bad thing. So is being uncooperative and withholding access to someone’s information by sending them worthless help. I’m a do-it-yourself kind of gal. There’s no way in hell I’d hand this blog over to some cornhole playing internet bro who knows how to do things that I’m perfectly capable of teaching myself over time. I change my own tires, remove my own stitches, and I think I can figure this elementary crap out, if companies would just offer better service.

Online, I’m definitely of the “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all” school. Except here (on MY blog), where I have given myself a chance to get some things off my chest. Sometimes these things are silly, sometimes serious. Only once here have I specifically directed any spite/jealousy towards a very young (in my opinion, over-hyped) fashion blogger. IFB has a post about fashion bloggers being cruel to their peers. It’s an interesting read with a lot of interesting comments. Only once has someone directly insulted me in my comments. I was told I was “a little too old” to opine that crop tops are unattractive. Also for good measure, the teenage guy (yes, a boy) added that I should go ahead and get a nose job. Wow! Never heard that one before! Anyhow… it didn’t bother me. I find that most people are of the sucking variety and when you put yourself out there online, it’s bound to attract assholes. We all need to get used to it and screen our comments. I enjoy the blogs that simply exist to be mean. Go Fug Yourself has a HUGE following. Those women are hilarious. Oh, and Goddammit, I’m Mad! is my absolute favorite. Let’s admit this simple math: most women dress for other women + women are catty = there will be pain. Here’s a good post on blogger etiquette.

One of the coolest handmade gifts I’ve ever seen: Anabela from the blog Feildguided is starting a new feature of people’s homes called “Homebodies” and was allowed to take pics of Melinda Josie’s adorable home. Josie is the creator of this great kitty buds fabric (in addition to many other wonderful things). Anyhow, her fiance carved this as a Christmas present for her. It’s Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird in her ham costume. Amazing.

Today, I had a lady day with my dear bff Jen (have you checked out her new food blog yet?). I had a half day at work and met her in Carytown after she got her wig smoked. We ate a great lunch at Can Can, talked and talked, and then wandered around checking out a ton of shops we had never been to. We went to Roan. Holy hell! I didn’t know those brands were sold in Carytown! I pawed Lanvin, Chloe, Jason Wu, Alexander Wang (still not impressed), Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy, Jil Sander… all in all, we were dying in there.

sigh, Louboutin

At Need, Jen did her own version of Man Repeller in this sweet union suit.

I also spotted this Miu Miu knockoff. No bueno.

At Pink, I was sooo tempted to get this bag. I’m still thinking about it. A cross-body bag would be nice. We finished up with margaritas at Nacho Mama’s and called it a day. Phew! I’m worn out!

Layers&Swathes beat me to the punch and posted about an incredibly patient/talented artist Kate MccGwire. Check out her post.

I get the whole #firstworldproblem hashtag on twitter. Really I do. People like to complain so it’s a way of acknowledging that your bitching is really whining when there are so many bigger problems out there, but you’re going to whine anyways. (Example: “Why do I always manage to get the shopping cart with the bum wheel? #firstworldproblem”) These tweets get on my nerves like no other. Really? Are we starting to feel that damn guilty for the lives we lead? Feeling guilt for the only life we’ve ever known? No matter how many sad things you see in the news, you will never truly know how people in third world countries feel. Do all of them want to be like us? No. Get over yourself, and if you really want to make a difference, donate to a charity and move on.

I am half Serbian and I am so ashamed and disgusted with a new movie that has come out called Srpski Film (A Serbian Film). Here is a review by one of my most adored bloggers. I am so incredibly sick and tired of “art” being an excuse for depravity. Political statements can be made in so many ways other than this.

Everything I’ve added to wish lists or bookmarked for further contemplation ends up being sold out before I decide to purchase. Either it’s a sign that I need to quit shopping or I need to make up my mind faster.

No way in hell.

City Kitty update: I saw her on Saturday and she’s gaining weight! She’s noticeably fatter and her spine and ribs aren’t as bony. I’ll be keeping an eye on her progress and hope that my note may have gotten her the attention she needed. Thanks for all the input! I was gearing myself up to grab her and go beat on their door… which I still may end up doing. We’ll have to wait and see.

I am loving this new blog Naked Without Lipstick. She is a 35 y/o lawyer in Chicago who has busted her ass to get where she is. Her blog isn’t fancy and full of pictures but I find her refreshing and love her take on things. Lately, my blog subscriptions have been focussing more on people I could actually see myself befriending, rather than simply appreciating their style.

So, I have a taxidermy chipmunk, a deer head wall decal, owl earings and a fox necklace. I am totally ready for gophers!

I got a $25 bamboo kitchen rug for in front of my sink for $5 at Marshalls. I love that place so hard.

I went to H&M on Saturday. I’ve noticed that hardly any of the things I’ve purchase there end up lasting in my closet for any length of time so I hadn’t been in over 6 months. Not much has changed but they were having a great sale and I got this all-season wool-blend dress for $15!! It fits perfectly, is made well and is lined oh-so-nicely! Honestly, I don’t need it. This is one of those tricky games I like to play with myself. It’s classic. It will never go out of style. I can wear it to any function under the sun at any time of year. So yeah, I bought it. Now something needs to go. I think I know what it will be.

This is only going in the minuses because I’ll probably offend someone. I’m 31. I have given myself a breeding cutoff at 35 because I just don’t think it’s safe. The health risks for babies explode exponentially after the mother turns 35. Regardless… I am nowhere near being ready to have a child any time soon. The bf isn’t either. I can’t even imagine a day in the near future when we will be ready. I know it’s said that if you waited until you were ready, no one would have kids but; I am just not that blatantly irresponsible to quit taking my birth control. I have been caring for my disabled mother for over half my life. I feel like I’ve gotten that care-giving uber-responsible shit out of my system. There are a lot of things I haven’t been able to do because of all this responsibility. I want to do those things. The thing that gets me torn is that I think I would be a great mom. I don’t want to regret missing out on all of that but; being around more people with children lately, the bf and I have come home and curled up on the sofa only to realize we wouldn’t be able to relax like that if we had a kid. Holy crap life would be insane! I know you moms are enraptured by your little darlings… and I think they’re pretty magical as well, when I can give them back. This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the issue at the moment (and let’s not even talk about tweens and teens… because they can just kiss my ass):
