feeling blue

by Lara on March 29, 2012

in beauty

I guess this was my blue period for manis this past week.

pop Beauty Aquatic Glitz – my first holo glitter (with flash) – about 4 coats

no flash – it’s soooo sparkly!

This was my b-day mani to see The Hunger Games. I was thinking Mockingjay on fire? It was a mess but fun! Most of the gems fell off in my sleep so I finally bought some real glue instead of just using polish to secure.

Carly gave me this deep periwinkle blue – OPI’s I Don’t Give a Rotterdam from their Holland collection. I LOVE IT!

I finally used those paper hole reinforcement labels! It was really easy but I had a hard time getting the fine points on the sides. What to do when you screw one up? Put some glitter or pearls on it! :D

Make sure your nails are completely dry before you use these!

handsome fellow

It’s been a while since you’ve seen Ulti. He’s getting so big! We still haven’t gotten him fixed since he’s totally an indoor cat and there are 2 main doors he would have to escape from. He hasn’t sprayed yet so I’m hoping he can keep his lil fuzzy nuggets. Ha!

His favorite place to be is the bedroom window. I’ve tried shoving birdseed under the screen to draw some entertainment but it never worked.

Pantone at Sephora

by Lara on March 26, 2012

in beauty

I told you I ordered the Tangerine Tango set for my birthday. It finally arrived.

Gosh, I’m such a sucker for packaging! I don’t ever want to take anything out of the box!

eyeliner (orange?!!), eyeshadow quad, prisma chrome blush (bronzer), blush duo (matte and shimmer), creme lipstick, gloss

The tops of the eyeshadow, blush duo and lipstick are all magnetized and really heavy

I will most likely use the eyeliner as lipliner… but you never know! Here are some swatches on the back of my hand, in the sun:

liner, lipstick (really creamy), gloss (super opaque)

eyeshadow, bronzer, blush duo (all really velvety)

So there you have it!

  •  Thanks to everyone for all the sweet birthday wishes! It was a success. The Hunger Games movie was fun. I feel they glossed over a lot of major details so, if you haven’t read the book, it would be much less powerful. PG-13 is also a bummer but they had to aim it at the teen crowd… who are so silly to watch a movie with. Carly got me this bracelet! I love it!

My possum pal @simplyalisha on Twitter even sent me a possum haiku for my birthday!

  • Seriously cannot wait for Prometheus to come out. It’s been far too long since a dark epic sci-fi movie that wasn’t cheesy.

  • Something to think about:

  • only positives this week!

It’s my birthday!

This birthday is looking to be a great one!

I’m getting Chinese takeout with my family during the day.

My mom got me this eShakti dress to my measurements. I was hoping it would arrive in time but no.

Tonight, Carly is coming down and we’re going to see The Hunger Games movie and get sushi! I’m so excited! I got advanced tickets over a month ago so hopefully we’ll be able to zip in early and get decent seats. It’s going to be a madhouse!

David got me this print by Rodrigo Ferreira – I need to get a frame:

Now let me tell you how dense I am. I may have scored high enough to get into Mensa but oh my god, I can be so clueless sometimes. I showed David this and he was all, “oh yeah, cock and pussy!” I hadn’t even looked at it like that! I just thought it was a cute rooster and cat in underpants. There was also the time we were looking at t-shirts online and there was a horse with a noose around its neck. “Why’s that horse hanging?” I asked. Seriously… hung like a horse never occurred to me. *forehead slap*

So anyways…

Victoria is THE best present giver on the planet. She sent me an amazing box of treats she had been working on for forever. It made my day! There were so many adorable things in it – a vintage purse, a nyan cat charm, a brooch from Let’s Die Friends, cookies, Essie’s Spring polish set, just so many cute thoughtful sweet things… and she works for Doc Johnson so… let’s just say I need to buy a bunch of batteries!

And as a treat to myself, I got the Pantone for Sephora collection for “color of the year” Tangerine Tango. I’ll let you know all about it as soon as it gets here!

So that’s all folks! I’m excited!

sewing night

by Lara on March 21, 2012

in crafty

Last night I had 3 ladies over to learn how to use a sewing machine and it was a blast. It all started on Twitter with an offer to help one girl learn how to sew and others piped up wanting to join. It turned into 4 hours of awesomeness where I suffered a wine headache ALL day today.

I haven’t really entertained MY friends at my apartment very much so I was pretty excited. Everyone came by around 6pm, dinner time, so I made an herbed pork roast, this mac and cheese recipe I found on Pinterest, and some prosciutto honey mustard Parmesan palmiers to snack on. They brought the wine AND cupcakes from Frostings!

palmiers via

I’ll admit, not much sewing was done. Amanda brought some fabric to make a pillow so we made a pattern and cut out two squares and sewed that up. I taught them how to thread a machine, how to wind and insert a bobbin and basically let them play around with the machine to get a feel for it. It’s pretty magical!

Buying a machine is a big investment though and you should see if it’s really right for you before you drop that kind of money on what could be a small hobby or passing fancy. You also need some key supplies if you’re going to seriously get into sewing. I did a post a while back of essential sewing items one should have. Also, here’s a zippered pillow cover tutorial.

After food was eaten, sewing knowledge was gained and we were all just sitting around my kitchen table shooting the shit and drinking down 4 bottles of wine, I got out mt huge nail polish box and we did manicures. I really needed a night like that… just some serious lady time with some awesome chicks.

Zoidberg

by Lara on March 17, 2012

in beauty

We had lobster tails for dinner last night (5 minutes in the rice cooker = perfect) and David called this one my Zoidberg mani.

I think it’s more orange than lobster but whatever.

I used Zoya Jancyn as the base and dotted with another Hunger Games polish, China Glaze Riveting.

I love using the dotting tool. Doing your opposite hand is a real pain but if you have the patience, the results are fun. Just pour some polish on a bit of foil and go to town.

I also forgot that I had this Zoya polish when I ordered the pop beauty Tangerine color. I did that on my toes. It’s a bit lighter and more pastel but not worth having both.

Maybe give away one?

pedis

by Lara on March 16, 2012

in beauty

Are your feet ready for Spring sandals?

The condition of my feet are a constant battle. I get rough calluses on my heels and the edges of my big toes. No matter what I do, they’re back in 2 days so paying for a pedi seems pointless to me. It wouldn’t last.

Here are some products I love that make up my arsenal of at-home pedicure products:

Sally sells this Be Natural Callus Eliminator. The full-size bottle is about $13 but they have a smaller one. A little goes a long way. This stuff is intense and actually burns a little on soft skin. Put this clear gel on your rough spots and prop your feet up – leave on for about 5 minutes then rinse off and hit with a pumice stone.

A pumice stone. These things are a couple bucks and you can find them everywhere. They last forever. This is an every day thing for me when I’m in the tub. After your skin has softened from being in the shower, scrub away regularly to keep your feet soft.

For Christmas, David got me the emjoi Micro Pedi. It’s essentially an electric foot sander. You can get those things with the sandpaper glued onto it to manually sand off rough spots or pay $35 for this. I do like this but it cuts off automatically if you push too hard, which means it takes a long time if this is the only thing you’re using. This is best for light buffing maintenance.

Those blade callus removers they use at the salon terrify me.

And a bright color! I just got this pop beauty Spring 2012 color in Tangerine Taste.

After all your hard work – socks with lotion at bedtime, socks with lotion around the house, socks with lotion after a shower – really the best thing you can do for your pups!

What’s your favorite pedicure product? What color are you wearing right now?
