party shoes

New Years Eve is approaching fast. Are you going out? I still have no idea what we’re doing. We went out to a fancy dinner last year and I passed out on the couch. Year before last, we walked around the neighborhood drinking champagne, witnessed a car accident and made it back in time for the ball to drop. I hope I do something this year worth dressing up for!

I’m not big on ultra formal shoes. My sparkly silver strappy numbers have only been worn once and that’s such a waste. My feet would also freeze in them this time of year. Here are some picks for New Years celebrating that will keep your toes warm and can also be worn the rest of winter!

Check out Macy’s for more great party shoes!

Nine West Riddleme Pumps

These would pretty much go with anything and can take you to the office as well.

Bestey Johnson Sydnee Flats – in other colors

Gold flats with a fancy metal flower! These could be your spare switch-out shoes when heels start to kill your feet. They’ll also go with everything!

INC International Concepts Gallia Booties

I want some red booties so badly! These would look great with skinnies and a fluffy sweater after your celebrating is done.

Nine West Delly Booties

I’m not big on sequins but c’mon! These are fabulous, plus that sturdy heel and small platform mean you’ll get a lot of wear out of them.

Boutique 9 Victorie Pumps – also in black suede

I adore this shape heel. It’s so modern.

What are you doing/wearing for New Years Eve?

quality

by Lara on December 1, 2011

in fashion

Last weekend I was at Target looking for some cute costume jewelry for the bf’s sister for Christmas, as requested. I love a good deal but I hate poor quality so, it ends up being quite the challenge to score the perfect item.

I found a pair of earrings I thought she’d like and inspected them, like I do everything. They were covered in coral colored glued on beads but so many were off-center. So I had to look at every pair on the rack until I found a pair up to par. As soon as I got home, I was removing the price so I could wrap them up and damned if one of the beads hadn’t popped off from the cart to my apartment.

Infuriating!

So a lot of people would say, “Well, what do you expect for a pair of $8 earrings?”

Honestly, I expect more. I expect to be able to wear something multiple times before it starts looking worn in the slightest. I expect to not have something break in a damn shopping bag.

This problem isn’t isolated to lower-priced stores. I see it all the time and what ticks me off the most is outrageously expensive online shops where you can see sloppy stitching in the photos. Maybe I’m just OCD and have an eye for imperfection but it drives me nuts. I’ve seen pictures of Louboutins where the sole glue is showing on the satin, the sole doesn’t line up with the heel, where a zipper on a $1000 dress is puckered and seams are pulling.

What’s happened to quality? Are we turning into such a fast disposable society that planned obsolescence and shoddy “made in China” garbage is the norm?

Julia recently wrote a post about the agony of shelling out money for better quality items and then getting them ruined. I totally feel her on this. I screwed up the most expensive bag I’ve ever owned within a few months. Devastating.

So what’s a girl to do?

What’s In What’s Out

by Lara on November 2, 2011

in fashion

I received my November issue of Harper’s Bazaar yesterday and once again the last page has pissed me off. Rife with contradictions, I had to leave my own commentary.

Oh, and I looked up “outre attire” – extravagant, bizarre, outlandish – oh give me a fucking break.

fall shoe wishlist

by Lara on October 13, 2011

in fashion

I LOVE cold weather shoes! Cozy and stompy and boots! THE BOOTS!  They’re my fave shoe in the whole world! Okay, enough exclamation points.

Do I need any more shoes? Of course not. I actually told myself I wouldn’t get any more shoes this year. Do I like to look? Uh, yeah!

I’ve been looking  a lot actually. I went to DSW recently and I love that most of the display shoes are in my size (6.5) so I wore flats and tried on at least 50 pairs and left with nothing! (pat pat pat on the back)

These are tickling my fancy right now and none of them are all that expensive. Do I break my promise and get a pair (or 2)? Oh geeze! Why do I do this to myself?

1 – Call it Spring – Apruzzese $69.99

2 – Wanted – Chap Oxford $25.67

3 – C. Label Alley-6 Wedge Bootie $49.95

4 – Blowfish – Vance $60 (also in grey and brown herringbone)

5 – Mia – Pampa Desert Wedge Bootie $59.99

flat brown boots

by Lara on October 5, 2011

in fashion

I’ve been pining away for flat brown boots for oh… a couple years now?

I have always wanted some authentic brown leather field boots like these Hispars but I can’t see myself spending over $200 on boots. I. Just. Can’t.

Lovely though, right?

So yeah, field boots have been getting more and more popular so I knew my time would come and this year was it!

I first saw these by Born. They’re called the Gilmore.

They were a killer deal at 6PM and the bf said he would get them for me for Christmas but I knew he needed to act fast. He didn’t and they sold out in my size.

So I found these ALDO Ackah boots and my mom got them for me for Christmas and they just arrived today and I LOVE them. I ordered a 1/2 size up for socks and they’re perfect. Instantly comfy and they’re going to age beautifully.

I can’t wait for Christmas!

Spring 2012 RTW

by Lara on September 27, 2011

in fashion

As I write this, it’s September 2011 and I always feel ill about posting 2 seasons ahead since we’re all craving Fall fashion right now but that’s just how it goes. There may be some styling inspiration for Fall in here!

Here are the Pantone color predictions for Spring 2012 (via). I’m starting to kinda hate this thing they do every season. I mean really, what’s the point? It’s so limiting and well, there was red, and bright green… and pretty much every other color of the rainbow in full force.

Here are my picks for Spring 2012 – things I could actually see myself wearing, of course.

VPL – they get me

Lela Rose – each piece, I’ll take it all!

Holly Fulton – how quirky!

Emilio de la Morena – like a piece of art!

Jill Stuart – it looks quilty

Tracy Reese – so wearable!

Jeremy Laing – lots of one-shoulder looks for Spring 2012

Diane von Furstenberg – one in every color please!

Chris Benz

Mulberry – LOVE those sage leggings with a skirt and sandals!

Kelly Wearstler – love the shoes with this simple outfit

3.1 Philip Lim – I usually have a jumpsuit in most of my RTW picks. I love em!

Dennis Basso – oh how I love his formal dresses!

Burberry Prorsum – always a favorite, the best outerwear and my fave color!

Badgley Mischka – I want this shirt in every color. God, I need to start sewing again.

Threeasfour

Ohne Titel

Jonathan Saunders – Can you just imagine wearing this? Gorgeous!

Barbara Tfank

Josie Natori – one of these shirts in every color as well please!

Reem Acra – agate print? omg

I adore Pringle of Scotland!

Roksanda Ilincic

Jenny Packham – I would get married in Vegas in this!

What were your favorites?

THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED

September 19th will mark 3 years of blogging here at My Milk Glass Heart!

So, to celebrate I’m having a giant giveaway of fabulous and exciting prizes to one lucky reader!

All you have to do is leave one comment on this post telling me what your most embarrassing fashion disaster was! See! Fun for everyone! ; )

Mine was starting my first day in the big kid building (middle/high school) with a cast on my left leg (no crutches, the cast had walking pegs on the bottom), ugly glasses, and a disaster of a poodle perm I didn’t know how to care for. All my right shoes ended up with terrible scuffs.

At midnight on September 19th, comments will close and I will use one of those fancy random generators to determine the winner!

Here is the bevy of wondrous and magical things the winner will receive:

  • DVD of the 1989 movie The ‘Burbs – this celebrates my friendship with Jen. We can pretty much quote the entire thing and I can’t count how many times we rewound (VHS!) Bruce Dern’s slip and fall off a roof. An 80s classic!

  • Japanese wash cloth for scrubbing that ass!
  • Tree Hut sugar scrub – it. is. my. jam. and it’s getting really hard to find so enjoy it while you have it!
  • Gilden Tree Terra Cota Body Buffer – you better have super soft skin after all this scrubbing!

  • A cosmetic bag full of Ulta cosmetics. This was a free gift w/ purchase and I’m gifting it to you! I picked the red one w/ a neutral palette. It’s supposed to be a $75 value.

  • A super cute notepad for jotting down lists. Some cute kawaii post-its, hedgehog tape, bunny envelopes and stickers! Monkey pen from Japan!

  • a few lil samples from here and there that I’ve never used, eos lipbalm, cute lil Japanese nail stickers + other silly little surprises!
  • A roomy gunmetal clutch – I bought a bunch of these for gifts from Target a while back and never gave them away. So… here ya go!

  • My favorite cookies in the whole world – Carr’s Ginger Lemon Cremes.

PLUS this awesome contribution:

  • From the lovely Danielle Todd of I am Suburban – she hand-crocheted this beautiful romantic alpaca scarf, perfect for the cool weather approaching. Thanks so much Danielle!

Please check out her etsy shop for more handmade and vintage goodies!

and follow her on Twitter!

So…. tell me you most mortifying fashion moment and good luck!

in or out?

by Lara on August 30, 2011

in fashion

I have NO love for the What’s In/What’s Out features in magazines.

Harper’s Bazaar ends each issue with one and here’s their list for September.

What do you think?

  1. DRESSES – IN: Lace and other feminine frills  – OUT: Hard-edged leather looks
  2. COATS – IN: Plaid coats – OUT: Jean jackets
  3. JEWELRY – IN: Grand earrings – OUT: Colored pearls
  4. BOX CLUTCHES – IN: Rococo floral prints – OUT: Dark brocades
  5. FINISHES: – IN: Luxe for details – OUT: Boho fringe
  6. FANCIFUL DRESSES: IN: Embellished body-con cuts – OUT: Plain shirtdresses

You got that ladies? Squeeze yourself if some tight dresses, don’t confuse brocade with Rococo, throw out your pearls and fringe, and god help you if you mix leather with something feminine.

What a crock.

thrifty chicks

by Lara on August 10, 2011

in fashion

Sarah from Yes and Yes just recently wrote about “non-niche” blogs… blogs that are kinda all over the place like this one! The article was more about trouble shooting but it got me thinking about other blogs I like that aren’t focused on one particular think like fashion, decor, design, etc but still have a cohesive theme of AWESOME!

I love people who invite you into their lives and show you around. They share their shopping trips and outfits and also their vacations, cooking adventures, favorite things, projects and cats! You may not always dig a certain outfit or find but you get the impression that they are living sincere good lives. That means the world to me.

Here are three awesome ladies who are really into thrift and I think you will enjoy their stories, even if you aren’t!

Top of the list is Katie of Mitu Vintage. Katie is from Seattle and keeps herself very busy hunting down beautiful vintage clothing and home items to sell in her etsy shop. In her posts she shares her life with you, her outfits, her home decorating projects, her trips and her process (kept company by a kitty and boyfriend). She’ll teach you about vintage labels, brainstorm on styling odd vintage pieces and talk about her weekend thrifting adventures. We’ve developed a little friendship and I think she’s a super sweet girl! Here’s her Twitter and Tumblr too!

Kaylah from The Dainty Squid is a bright haired lady from Ohio. She sells cute handmade bags in her etsy shop and shares her quirky outfits, adventures in the forest, kitties, Friday favorites, tutorials and great thrift finds. She and her fiance just bought their first house and are having fun decorating. Her Twitter and Tumblr too!

Melanie is a Canadian living in Brooklyn with her boyfriend. She just moved from writing a fashion-focused blog (here) to a broader look into her life-  une vie geniale. She works as a merchandiser for the brand Kensie, shares her cute thrift-centric outfits, trips out of the city, favorite things, vegan recipes, hair style tutorials and crafty projects. Her Twitter too!

Who are some of your favorite bloggers? Please share!
