Most of us can say that a member of our family has served our country and we all have a friend who has joined the military. May is National Military Appreciation Month. No matter which direction your politics lean, it is important to recognize the importance of our armed forces now and throughout history. Our service members have volunteered their lives, putting themselves in danger, giving up the comforts of home, and their families go through tremendous stress as well in their support.
Here is a list of resources so that you can do your part and let our soldiers know you appreciate their sacrifices.
- Adopt a soldier! It really is a lot of fun! Here’s one major resource for getting involved but, a simple search will lead you to many other organizations. You can find out what is appropriate to send and how to send it. My family has adopted a female in Iraq, an entire group in Germany who was flying back and forth to Afghanistan, our neighbor down the street in the Navy and his 4 best friends around Christmas time, and many others. Flat rate Priority boxes through the USPS work best. So does simply writing a letter or sending a card. Whatever you can do will be greatly appreciated.
- Donate to struggling families and those who have lost a loved one. Children of fallen soldiers can use your help. You can also donate to Fisher House, an organization offering inexpensive rooms for families who are visiting their wounded loved ones at military hospitals. $10 covers one night.
- Donate to the military dogs here! Or maybe you could foster a soldier’s dog while they are stationed abroad!
- Donate money, any items you can spare, or your time to wounded veterans at any of the VA Hospitals across the country. Here is a map and list. Here is a list of other ways you can support our vets.
If you have any questions about adopting a soldier, please feel free to ask!

This is a great list of resources! Speaking from experience, I can say it’s great to get mail when you’re overseas, whether it’s a box of goodies or a simple card.
