making a home

Every time we go north to visit the bf’s parents, we have to stop at IKEA. It’s pretty much a rule written in stone. This past weekend we went and here’s what we got! (Yay tax refund!)

First off, the little things.

After painting and reorganizing the inside of the pantry last week, I wanted to get some cute fabric storage boxes for all of our snacks and teas and whatnot. You women know what I’m talking about… just pull it off the shelf, have a snack attack and put it all back in one container. I found these great sturdy, easy to clean bags that even have handles. They’re meant for recycling but will be great for all our chips and cookies and random snacks on a movie night. I really didn’t need 4 but they’re collapsible and I’m sure I’ll find a use for the extra ones one of these days.

$5.99 for set of 4

We have a clawfoot tub with no ledges to put shampoo and stuff on. I’ve been using those plastic things with the suction cups but they get heavy and sink into the tub and they take up a lot of space so, now we have this running across the top and it’s fabulous.

$7.99

These are great for keeping cereal fresh. I already have two and grabbed one more for the never-ending supply of cereal in our house.

$3.99

Napkin caddy. Simple enough.

$1.99

The bf has been dead set on putting a pendant lamp in the bathroom. We’re going to have to run the cord neatly up the wall. That’ll be fun with the high ceilings. Anyhow… we got the iconic Knappa lamp. Totally ridiculous to put together. It came with the cord set, which we didn’t know and ended up getting an extra.

On sale for $19.99

We finally got the kitchen table we’ve been dying for! I have to admit that the finish on it is waaaay nicer than I thought it would be! I’m still going to get class cut for the top eventually.

$149

You know those plastic bins with drawers in them that college kids use? Well, I’m over it! I have one huge one taking up valuable closet real estate (our closets are soooo small) and plastic storage boxes tucked all over the place – under the bed and everywhere else they would fit. The chest of drawers I wanted was no longer in the color combo I had my heart set on and they almost doubled the price on the new version. I got this tall white chest instead and the bf got 2 that are half as tall with orange drawer fronts but I can’t find those online. I love that it’s tall and narrow and doesn’t take up much floor space. From the top down here’s what I organized last night: every day sneaker socks, knee socks, brown and bright tights, grey and black tights, winter scarves and gloves, bright bras and matching panties, nude bras and everyday underoos, black bras and panties, fancy pants lingerie on the bottom. It is delightful!

$119.99

So that’s that. We were so worried about getting all of those heavy boxes in the car so we didn’t get everything on the list. We still want 2 extra inexpensive stackable chairs for emergency seating, a larger coffee table, a comfortable quirky side chair in the livingroom…and eventually the Klippan sofa in orange or dark brown leather. I also need to grab two more of our kitchen chairs before I can’t find them anymore, from Sears of all places.

Putting stuff together from IKEA is a ridiculous amount of fun for us. I get everything out of the box and separate all the pieces and put like with like, even the hardware, neatly on the bed. Then we slowly work together with the instruction manual. It’s like adult Legos! I will start screws into the right holes and the bf handles the electric drill. I wield the hammer for the pegs and it all comes together smoothly. I think we’re a pretty great team! :)

It really is like adult legos. Always a good time. I find that wine helps me concentrate and helps me avoid cussing. :) EVERY time I find myself headed up to NoVa for work, or to see family, I always stop by the Ikea. To not visit would be a crime.

I laughed at the “adult leggos” sentence. I love Ikea. I wish it were closer.

I have that table! I am pretty satisfied with it. The price is right and it looks pretty nice.
