winter rescue

My skin has been looking like crap. Seriously. This winter has done a number on me. Dry ashy patches, splitting skin on my hands, feathering around my nails, sallow skin. I’ve had it.

You really have to go double time on your skin routines in the winter and I’ve been slacking. First off, if you ever have to wash dishes by hand or expose yourself to cleaning chemicals, you must wear gloves this time of year. My bf’s mom gave me the cutest pair of pink elbow length kimchi gloves with little bears on them. Gloveables makes fancy waterproof gloves for all your chores. Flippin adorable.

Other than keeping hand lotion in my purse and reapplying all. day. long. a few things have helped.

One thing that has helped me get rid of the dry patches on my body and hands are salt and sugar scrubs. I love sharp harsh scrubs since my skin isn’t sensitive. My favorite pricey scrubs are from Bliss. The Blood Orange+White Pepper sugar scrub smells amazing, the Vanilla+Bergamot Body Buff is a bit more gentle and the Hot Salt Scrub is no joke. LOVE IT!

My less expensive favorite is Tree Hut’s scrubs. My favorite scent is the Almond and Honey. Scrub away, rinse off. You’re pink and fresh!

You can also make salt and sugar scrubs at home on the cheap. Mix up a few scoops of sugar/epsom salt/table salt with enough almond oil (or grape seed, or olive oil) to have a thick consistency and scrub away.

You can use this gently on your face as well, following up with a face wash to remove excess oil, but my old favorite will always be St. Ives Apricot Scrub a few times a week to slough off dry patches and brighten up your skin. (They also make tubs of body polish now.)

I’ll use whatever body moisturizer that smells good to me at the moment. Lately, it’s been amber scented lotions. Body butters kick up the moisture factor in the winter. For the face, I’ve always been in love with Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar for its weightlessness (best in the summer) but lately, I’ve been using a cheaper, thicker (but not greasy) moisturizer that I’m really impressed with and you can get it anywhere.

Peef-off masks are a good way to rid yourself of dull facial skin, as well as ripping out half your peach fuzz. I love them in the winter since mud masks seem drying and better for absorbing oil in the summer. A while ago, this line called Cosmence from France was being sold in the US and their products really wowed me. Then they stopped selling here and switched the website to French. You can find people shipping to the US on eBay. (this store is nice but limited) The Cherry Peel is my favorite and I actually gave myself a treatment today. No matter what peel-off you use, slather on a thick layer and let it dry completely then pick an edge and pull swiftly. If you’re a glutton for punishment, you’ll love it. Do a looksee online and at your drugstore and you’ll find a bunch of cheaper more easily accessible options.

The feet. Oh the feet. I’ve written about this stuff before and I’ll write about it again. It works.

Finally, thanks to my bf, I was introduced the wonders of Japanese washcloths. They’re fantastic. You can find them at most any Asian market for dirt cheap, they last forever and dry quickly. They’ll scrub the hell out of you!

My mom used to tell me it was rumored that Joan Crawford used to scrub her face with Ajax. I don’t know if it’s true but other than the fact that we share the same birthday, she’s a woman after my own heart. Look at that skin! Now get to scrubbing!
