  • Holy cow! This is what I have wanted for sooooooo long! Spoonflower is a new company that will print your own designs/photos/whatever on mercerized Kona cotton, with NO minimum purchase, at $18 a yard. It’s a wee bit pricey for cotton but considering the cost of Marimekko (swoon), you get exactly what you want! I am going to have to brainstorm a bit and make an order! (This Flickr set shows what others are doing with Spoonflower fabrics!)
  •  White high gloss floors and this Swedish blog that they came from.

  • Kate Bingaman-Burt draws what she buys. Interesting concept for a blog. She also sells a zine each month on etsy of all her purchases compiled. Wish I had thought of this.
  • I’ve seen the couple’s mittens (Smittens… yeah), which really creep me out. Honestly, can you think of anything more emasculating than making your boyfriend share a hand-holding mitten with you? Blech! These are adorable though, if you have a small child. Seriously precious.

  • I think this Colour In wallpaper would be a lot of fun in a half-bath, if you had a lot of guests… just take away the markers after everyone’s had a few drinks.

-

  • Helen Mirren, I’ve always loved you. You’re smoking hot in a bikini at 63 and you have aged gracefully but, my dear, you are an enormous idot.
  • Warmer winters are causing higher (than normal) lemming deaths in Norway.
  • I love creative menus but honestly, the offerings at Moto in Chicago are grossing me out.
  • Strep throat ruined my chances of being in a ridiculous line at H&M for the CDG unveiling. From what I’ve been reading from my deathbed, I don’t think much was missed – inexpensive filler and what I really want is out of my price range. Story of my life.

gifting

by Lara on November 12, 2008

I have had moments of being overly generous in the past. My first year at my new highschool, I was so excited about all my new and wonderfrul friends that I went broke getting the perfect gifts for an excessive amount of people. The joy I got from making so many people feel appreciated was worth it but looking back, it was a bit much and a bit foolish. Last year, quite a few things were put on the credit card and I have not been happy about paying it off this year.

Christmas is going to be here in the blink of an eye and I don’t think there’s anything kind and generous about having an empty checking account on December 25. You have to be kind and generous to yourself too. I don’t think I know a single person who has the recommended 6 months of income tucked away for an emergency, which is especially important in this uncertain time. Maybe we should be good to one another and take some of the pressure and expectations away.

Maybe this year would be a good idea to start a name drawing where friends/family pick a name out of a hat and are only responsible for one person. You could also set a price limit.

If you truly value the time spent with dear friends and family, why not plan a party instead of gifts. A byob potluck is a great way to feel festive with friends, play some cheesy holiday music, eat one of those cheese balls rolled in nuts, take a ton of pictures and have fun without a major financial burden placed on anyone.

There’s something to be said for eliminating junk from your life. Do you really need to add more junk to the lives of those you care about? How about a gift that will get used up and will not become a dust catcher a year later. A box of chocolates, a candle, bath products, a gift certificate to a favorite restaraunt or coffee shop, a gift certificate for a simple manicure, a bottle of wine or decadent flavored liquor… all will be indulged in and eventually will be gone but the memory of the experience will always be appreciated.

Practical gifts with serious personality are always appreciated. I for one, would love a snazzy new umbrella. Maybe grandma would like a modern pair of patterned rainboots to make her feel cheerful and hip.

Okay, this is going to sound a little crappy but it’s the truth. Have you repeatedly given gifts to a certain someone over the years and have never received anything from them in return? I know the holidays are about giving but, maybe this year would be a good time to draw a line in the sand and exempt yourself from spending on that special person this time around.

Here’s a previous post I did about cheap independent design. Lots of ideas!

Some people like to give a lot of little gifts to someone as opposed to one large one. Those little things add up quickly. Maybe one nice chef’s knife would be more affordable than a basket of silly kitchen gadgets, and definitely more appreciated in the long run.

Is your father dying for a plasma TV? Everyone in the family (and his friends) could chip in for this huge purchase. No donation is too small and everyone gets to sign a big card. I did this for a friend’s birthday a few years ago. She wanted an iPod and of course you need to get the accessories like a car adapter and charger and extended warranty, etc. Some people donated $5 and some gave $50 but everyone played an equally important role in helping their friend have an awesome birthday. It involved a bit of legwork and pestering emails on my part but a dream gift for someone can bring a room to tears. (I think she liked the card best of all.)

Your friends/family could also choose to adopt a disadvantaged child, family, or animal shelter from a charitable organization and place the focus of giving on someone who truly needs help.

Getting crafty and making something by hand can sometimes cost more than just grabbing something at the store so, if you get the great idea to sew and embroider everyone a personalized pillow, think about all the supplies you will need, the true cost of everything, and the time involved. I have never once started a project with wonderful intentions and have it turn out the way I had envisioned in my mind, without some unexpected disaster. Be realistic.

Photo cards are a fun idea – dressing up the dog in a santa hat makes everyone smile, as well as a personal hand written letter letting those you love know how much they mean to you. You can also get your family/friends together for an ugly holiday sweater group photo. As bad as it sounds, it’s even better if you go to a place like Wal-Mart with uber cheesy backgrounds at minimal costs. Just take the 8×10 to one of those photo machines at the drugstore and get a bunch of smaller sizes made up for everyone, or print them at home if you have the right printer.

No matter how you attempt to make the holidays a bit more reasonable and sane for yourself and those you love, it truly truly truly is the thought that counts. Wouldn’t it be nice to finally have a holiday season that was more about quality time and laughter than lines and traffic and anxiety and debt?

chains and loss

by Lara on November 10, 2008

in fashion

There are only a few articles of clothing I’ve owned that I would be devastated if something were to happen to them, as I’m really not that attached to things. These items include my peep-toe ankle boots, another is an odd asymmetrical top with bird silhouettes across the front that I am now nervous to wear too often because it’s getting a bit delicate. There was the landmark Dr. Martens trade of 1997 gone horribly wrong, where I not only got rid of my 8 eyelets but also lost the green 3 eyelets I traded them for. (That bitch.) A final thing is my mesh chain link necklace left at an ex’s house about a year ago. I have been mourning the loss of this necklace for far too long. The funny thing about it is it’s just a necklace and one can only make an issue out of getting something back for so long before it’s ridiculous. If someone refuses to cooperate with you and no one else remembers to grab it for you, and this ex is now expecting twins, you really can’t pop in months later expecting to get your necklace back. The only problem is that I can’t find the perfect replacement. So, in honor of my long lost beautiful chunky chain link necklace that I got soooooooooo many compliments on, here are some interesting alternatives that aren’t half bad (but still not as fabulous).

bring me the lasers!

by Lara on November 10, 2008

I’m wrapping my brain around 3D printing, which at its most simplified, cuts layers to create a three-dimensional model. (There’s also a type that uses resins and such sprayed like an inkjet printer to create the layers.) This new technology is mainly used for manufacturing prototypes but it’s also being used to create functional permanent pieces.

This lamp designed by Bathsheba Grossman, a science nerd at heart, is blowing my mind.

There’s also a ton of jewelry being created with lasers.  Anthony Roussel, in the UK, cuts intricate designs into wood, like in this rich organic cuf bracelet.

Nervous System is a design team of two MIT graduates who use lasers to create jewelry representing the intricate repetitive shapes found in nature. Their website is a lot of fun, very imformative, and they invite others to share in their ideas. Felt designs are coming soon!

(My craft room might need a laser cutter soon.)

one in every country please

I needed to purge my overflowing bookmarks so here’s some beautiful architecture I’ve been collecting. Check out the links for additional information and pictures! (There are a lot of wood and stone floors in these homes… not my usual)

Tijuana apparently isn’t just for novelty vacations and abominable side shows anymore. A modern apartment complex has been developed, sticking with a strict color scheme of black, white and deep orange.

A 120 year old home in Japan has been renovated, with the central focus being an enormous table. Okay.

This is an old firehouse in London that has been converted into a really impressive house (check out the retractable roof).

Another conversion, is a silo in Utah. The curved walls require ingenious utilization of space and the way standard windows were accomodated is impressive. I’ve always been intrigued by round structures and used to dream of living in a geodesic dome house but after learning that everything must be custom made to conform to the shape, I lost interest. This makes me want to dream again.

Another curved house in London. The giant leather sling in the library just kills me. How wonderful and cozy could that be? All that glass and the pops of color are so ideal.

This home is tucked away in the woods of Holland. So much beautiful glass! Oh, to live without curtains and have nature so close.

Oh, and the next time I happen to be swinging through Spain, I’ll definitely be staying at the Hotel Diagonal in Barcelona! ;)

it can't be stopped

Damn you clearance sales!!!! Last night I vegetated in bed and took the time to peruse hundreds of pages of clearance sales online. They’re usually a disaster for me. My timing is terrible and all that’s left are x-smalls or xx-larges in hideous colors.

Well, last night I hit the jackpot. I stocked up on super cheap basics for layering and lounging around the house (my pajama situation has needed a serious overhaul), and I scored some really sweet deals on Target.com.

This sequined tunic was on sale for $6.24! With tights, it can make a pretty intense mini dress, or could be an interesting layering piece. The sequins are sewn on too.

This dress was $8.74! It’s one of the Go International offerings and is a satin fabric with a bold blue/black stylized plaid. I’m finding myself being drawn to this shade of blue more and more. The reviews on this were mixed. A lot of people complained about the burlap sack shape, as if no one can think for themselves, beyond the picture Target supplies. Belts anyone? I guess because I know how to sew, I’m usually not worried about hemming or taking things like this in. I do think those sleeves are going to need a bit of shortening. Maybe not. At this price you could shred it!

This is another $8.74 Go Int. dress. Black satin with interesting pleating at the sleeves. Some reviews referred to football shoulders. I really don’t know why anyone would buy something like this if they already have shoulder issues. This is such a classic shape, it will never go out of style.

The fun thing about online shopping is you can fill your cart to the brim and then after an hour, you can come back to it and remove anything you’re having second thoughts about.

Is it time to think about getting festive? Holiday decorations are in the stores. Ugh. I still have party dresses that have only been worn once so, I refuse to buy any new investment dresses this season. Silvers, greys and blues are a nice way to get out of the black rut, though. (Oh man, that pewter leather jacket is so sweet!) I think I’ll be wearing the purple satin strapless dress I got on killer sale from the Limited this x-mas or New Years. We shall see if there’s anything worth wearing it to.

Look at the details on these dresses!!!

I really like the idea of tulle over sparkles. I think this could translate well in the real world - a super sheer top over a sequin tank… hmmm. I got this really weird mesh top at H&M a few years ago. It’s an odd dark taupe shade, simple with long sleeves but it looks like it’s been pieced together. I really need to find some cheap sparkly black tank top to go under it.

I can’t stand it! I must have these gloves! They would update any old party dress… agh! That’s what my hair is kinda looking like now… only longer and shaggier. This is the first time I’m enjoying a growing out phase… milking the layers for all they’re worth.

The contrast between the Bebe grey wool boucle dress and brown leather corset belt is also an interesting combination. Black and brown is never easy to pull off. This dark  brown usually looks terrible with black but it’s nice with grey. I like a cognac or natural leather work with black as it seems more fresh. That’s why I can’t bring myself to love these Betsey Johnson wedges. On my desktop monitor I thought they were all black but on my brighter laptop, I saw the dark brown trim. Eww! Or are they navy and brown or navy and black? Whatever. I’m over it now.

indulge me

by Lara on November 5, 2008

I’ve had my eye on some pretty little things lately but have been too busy to write about them.

First off, I want long gloves. Long and slouchy. This February when the AW08 collections were released, there were some serious long glove looks.

Elie Tahari

These are so different. They’ve been in my Flickr account for almost two weeks and have gotten some of the highest views of any picture I’ve added. Obviously, they’re piquing some interest. They’re by ACNE and are sold here.

I also need some good black pumps that will last me for an eternity. I have tortured myself in some lousy cheap shoes over the years and frankly, I’m sick of it. I had a conversation this past Sunday about a local store that sells independent label t-shirts with above average price tags. The shirts are intense and wonderful and perfect and I basically said that I would rather own 2 $30 t-shirts than 4 $15 ones. A friend had to disagree but seriously, wouldn’t you rather have what you really want instead of a pile of things that just don’t measure up? Of course I can’t afford these Maison Martin Margielas but I would like something reasonable, well made, and with some serious but subtle personality.

I also wish that the Demonia Deviant strappy sneaker boots weren’t entirely too large. ARGH! I guess I will have to dig harder for some all black Vans Sk8-his.

This semester has kept me so busy with reading, as well as working on this blog so, I am vowing that during my holiday break, I will make a zipper necklace!

This ring is driving me crazy and I am debating on it being my next big treat for myself. From Erica Weiner’s website:

Despite their diamond misnomer, Herkimers are are actually six-sided, double-terminated quartz crystals and are relatively valueless. Nevertheless, unscrupulous jewelers during the Civil War often tried to pass off these stones as the more precious variety.
