I’m wrapping my brain around 3D printing, which at its most simplified, cuts layers to create a three-dimensional model. (There’s also a type that uses resins and such sprayed like an inkjet printer to create the layers.) This new technology is mainly used for manufacturing prototypes but it’s also being used to create functional permanent pieces.
This lamp designed by Bathsheba Grossman, a science nerd at heart, is blowing my mind.

There’s also a ton of jewelry being created with lasers. Anthony Roussel, in the UK, cuts intricate designs into wood, like in this rich organic cuf bracelet.

Nervous System is a design team of two MIT graduates who use lasers to create jewelry representing the intricate repetitive shapes found in nature. Their website is a lot of fun, very imformative, and they invite others to share in their ideas. Felt designs are coming soon!

(My craft room might need a laser cutter soon.)
