paralyzed

You know when you hear a song and something consumes you? You must find out who does the song. You hunt it down and then you have it on repeat for 3 days. In the days before the interwebs, this happened to me when “The Silence of the Lambs” came out. You know, that song Buffalo Bill dances to? Now, I can’t separate myself from the movie when I hear it. The original… and not the original. (NSFW)

There have been a few songs that have drawn me in like this throughout my life and what I’ve noticed is that they’re sung by women for the most part. When I was little, Stevie Nicks’ voice would have me hypnotized, paralyzed until the song was over. Kate Bush’s “Running up That Hill” posed a problem. It would come on in the most random places when I was a child and again I would be paralyzed, but no effort could yield any info. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I actually found out who this magical song was by. Repeat for a week.

I dated a boy when I was a teenager who played this song for me. It ended up being the only song by Slowdive I liked and it was pretty much the best make-out song ever… until this was played for me by another smooth young man, and this by yet another… they could spot a sucker a mile away, huh? Thus began my obsession with Bjork.

It had been a while since something new struck me then my friend Marisa posted something somewhere about this wonderful Bat For Lashes video and I ended up telling all my other girlfriends and we all became hooked. Then, one day I saw a cute video of cats running on treadmill to a Ladyhawke song. The video has been removed from Youtube (truly devastating) but if you play this video and this one at the same time, you will get the same effect. ;)

This weekend, in post-Halloween recovery mode, I watched “Meet Bill” and was struck by a not-so-new song I had never heard before. Words can’t describe how I felt when I first heard this. Have you ever heard a song before and your heart races and you become flushed? Music does strange things…

It was me on that road
But you couldn’t see me
Too many lights out, but nowhere near here
It was me on that road
Still you couldn’t see me
And then flashlights and explosions
Road’s end getting nearer
We cover distance but not together
If am the storm, If am the wonder
And the flashlights, nigthmares
And sudden explosions
I don’t know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish
It’s about you and the sun
A morning run
The story of my maker
What I have and what I ache for
I’ve got a golden ear
I cut and I spear
And What else is there?
Roads and getting nearer
We cover distance still not together
If I am the storm if I am the wonder
Will I have flashlights, nightmares and sudden explosions
There is no room where I can go and
You’ve got secrets too
I don’t know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish

(Now I’m digging up everything by the woman singing – Karin Dreijer Andersson who is in The Knife. How cute/creepy is this video? And here’s some skateboarding for ya! ;))

I love this post! Haha. I think I finally found my thing that gets me going. Fashion is such a fail for me, and now I don’t have a home to decorate or dream of decorating, which I really miss. I have so little that is wholly mine. I believe it’s why music is becoming a huge huge deal in my world right now.

Jay (of Clerks) is so delicious. Have you ever heard Placebo’s version of Running Up that Hill? I love love love it. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKkaLM9NcSo

Also, your link for what’s supposed to be the Bat for Lashes vid is a Bjork vid.

Oh man. I’m so tired but I’ll definitely enjoy exploring the depths (and links) of this post after work tomorrow. Boooo… :( So many hours away!

I know what you mean about not having much that is wholly yours. It’s eternally frustrating but you’re on the right path. I mean, the current living situation is temporary right? :)

I just like to fantasize like every other person. Pretty things are a nice distraction from daily stress, whether I can afford it or not!

(Jay was the only thing that got me through Clerks 2… god bless!)

Oh that placebo version is so awesome! Never heard it before! I really really dig the video. Thanks!

Oh, thanks for the heads up on the link… damn copy and paste glitch!
